Sunday, August 31,2003 Many, I mean many families arrived yesterday! The weather provided a nice atmosphere for folks to enjoy! Several people fishing are having success in catching various fishes. The Spots are best fish for their size on Bloodworms. Flounders, Croakers, Pompanos, Bluefish and Red Drum are showing up, however most are on the small size and therefore getting tossed back! It is day 7 on the non-raining day counter. Day 7! Yippee! Stay tuned! Friday, August 29,2003 7:00 pm Small Pompanos are the only fish showing up today. Popeye minnows have been seen running in the surf. When this happens, Red Drums, Blue Fish and Flounder start showing up. One fisherman came in for a cast net. The beach water colorizations is dark close to shore and but much clearer approximately 1/2 mile off shore. Hopefully the heavy rains are gone for eastern North Carolina and the extra river water's will depart! There has not been many folks down this past week! Non-rainy day counter is 5. Stay tuned! Thursday, August 28,2003 11:00am Weather wise, it is Hot! For me, the heat index is pushing 100 degrees. Non-raining day counter is 4 days. 2:00pm. Other fishermen have stopped in for beach chairs and umbrellas. Pompanos and Flounder are still being caught! Now the outside temperature is way-way past Hot, (94 F and Hi humidity!). Stay cool! Wednesday, August 27, 2003 10:00am Happy Birthday to someone special! Pompanos and one,16 inch Flounder reportedly caught off the surf in Kure Beach. (I believed him!) The river watches report no flooding anywhere in southeastern North Carolina. Many of these locations are 6 to 10 feet below their posted flood stages. Colorization of the beach water here consist of mixed swirls. Dark brackish brown to a pretty sea blue. Outside the weather is very warm and nice at this time. No rain in 3 days. Stay Tuned! Tuesday, August 26, 2003 Red Planet Mars is over Kure Beach after midnight. Well, "kind of". As Earth and Mars approach each other, Pompanos are being caught in the surf. Locals are enjoying these tasty fish. The heat index is pushing 100 degrees at 3:30 pm. Non-raining day count is 2. The last river flooding of the eastern Carolina's should end sometimes in the morning. *Stay tuned! Monday, August 25,2003 Its another beautiful Monday in sunny Kure Beach, North Carolina. Fishing reports? Well, we will just say that they are on the slim side at this time. Yesterday in the late afternoon, a local fisherman catches many small Pompanos in the surf. He got a kick out of letting non-fishermen reel in the fish so he could release the fish back into the ocean. Today the humidity and the temperature are on the rise. Fortunately there is a pleasant east wind blowing off the surf. Non-raining day count is 1. Stay tuned! Sunday, August 24, 2003 Of the few fishermen that did come by our Shop today, some reported seeing several catches of Spanish and King Mackerels off the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. Other fishermen enjoyed their time off catching and releasing smaller fish. Yesterday, the beach had many sunbather until a dark cloud came in around 6:00 pm. Lightning and a cold rain shower chased everyone off the beach, therefore the non-raining day counter was reset to 0! The colorization of the ocean water has darken again. Stay tuned! Saturday, August, 23,2003 10:30 am. The traffic activities of this morning are at a much slower pace than of the past 10 weekends. The ocean water's temperatures and colorization characteristic are appearing to return to normal. For a LIVE web visualization go to KureBeachFishingPier.COM and one may get a live shot of our beautiful beach. (Thanks to Mike Robertson and the rest of the Kure Beach Fishing Pier staff!) NOAA river reports. Of the 200 mile surrounding Wilmington, NC there is only one report of flooding. The Lumber River at Lumberton, NC is 10 inches above flood stage. There, the river flows into South Carolina's Little Pee Dee River which flows into the Great Pee Dee River and on into the intercostals waterways near Georgetown, SC. Both of these large rivers are below flood stage. No points along the Cape Fear River in NC are flooding at this time. We are in day 4 of no rain. Stay tuned!. Friday, August 22,2003 6:00 pm . Reports of several King
Mackerels were caught off the Kure Beach Fishing Pier today.
While I was riding my bicycle this afternoon, I noticed that the color of the
ocean's water along the surf and out to about 150 yards, appeared to have
returned back to the normal, dark-greenish-blue that we are use to seeing.
The beach had many people enjoying the sun, surf and water today.
At the present time, there are not many visitors in town. Today was day 3 of
no rain. Thursday, August 21, 2003 The beautiful weather over the past two days, allowed us to work on outdoor projects not pertaining to our Beach Shop. We had a very special person to fill in for us! She reported that very few fishermen were in our Blue Marlin Beach Shop, those that were fishing only caught the small stuff. Tuesday night was town council meeting for the Town of Kure Beach. The citizens were told that the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers is planning to recap the beach in Kure Beach starting January, 2004. Personally, I don't like to see the beach keep getting disturbed this way since (1) its unnatural (2) it's expensive (3) one has to walk over 30% of the pier's distance before he or she is over any water's of substantial depths to catch fish and (4) the beach is all ready wide enough. * Non-rainy day count in Kure is 2 days. Stay-tuned! Tuesday, August 19, 2003 Several reports of Founder being caught in the surf of Kure Beach and a short distance south of Fort Fisher along the river's rock wall. The state park has several vehicles with empty boat-trailers in the parking lot. Several more were seen at the wildlife boat-landing, east of Snow's Cut bridge. The rains showers ended by late Monday morning but the skies still had a dark overcast well into the afternoon. Today there are clouds in the sky, but the sun is dominate at the present time. Do not see many people fishing the surf. Consecutive non-rainy day count in Kure is 0. Stay tuned! Monday, August 18, 2003 This morning we woke up to the sounds of thunder! Everything outside is a little soaked. Even the frogs are tired of singing their tunes! Anyway, we did have some happy customers in this past weekend who enjoyed catching fish from the surf! I hate to it, but I must reset the sunny day odometer back to 0. What a way to start Monday! Stay tuned! Sunday, August 17,2003 The fish are back!! Well it the start of another beautiful week here in eye-catching Kure Beach, NC. Flounder, Bluefish, Croakers, and Pompanos were the talk of the shop on this beautiful, sunny, Sunday morning. I must say that in the late part of Saturday afternoon, a few rain drops did fall only to dry up within the half hour. Other than that, today makes day 6 of no significant rain showers. Stay tuned! Saturday, August 16,2003 5:30pm. More Good News! Other folks are reporting the exact same catches as were reported this morning! Then a dark cloud came up this afternoon and decided to bypass Kure Beach. :) 12:30 pm. Good news! I finally have a nice onshore catch to report! Local fisherman and his buddies came back and reported they needed more Mud Minnows. Yea!! Seven Flounder of which two were keepers, many good size Bluefish and Croakers rounded out their catch today. Blue crabs are also being caught. I mention to him that NC Fisheries have a research-reward program going on. He said, "Hay, that's great!" More good news, The ocean's water is 81 plus degrees now. Swimmers say it feels luke-warm-fantastic. For one of our guest from Virginia, his family is enjoying the not so crowed beach since their Schools don't start back till September. Five jelly fish were seen on the south end. Today is day 5 of no rain! Stay tuned! Friday, August 15,2003 A duplicate day of yesterday here in beautiful Kure Beach. Weather man was correct in his predictions 5 days ago. Lots of little small fish around as fishermen toss back their catches of Croaker and Pompanos. According to Gareth McGrath of the Star-News paper, Wilmington NC, state fisheries are setting up a Blue Crab "watch out" for researching, monitoring migration and breeding patterns of this marine animal that generated $29 M in 2002. Fishermen will receive a hat or $5 for each tagged crab. I assume the crab must be alive. If a crab has two tags then the crab is worth $20. Click here for more information. Today is day 4 of no rain! Stay tuned! Thursday, August 14,2003 7:00pm. Today was another beautiful day. One faithful fisherman enjoyed his casting along the surf. He did mention that several Sheephead fish were cleaned on Kure Pier. 9:00am. Yesterday was a beautiful day in Kure Beach. Sun was shining, birds were singing, air temperature was pleasantly warm, and the street traffic was slow. However, no fish stores to report. :( Last night, the weather man reported low rain shower activity in the area and that the surface temperatures of the ocean were back up in the lower 80's at many places. Searching the web this morning, I did find a site that reports the flood levels of the Cape Fear River. <click on). Many place, 70 plus river-miles upriver like Chinquapin and the Lock 1, south of Elizabethtown NC, are expecting hi water volumes and flooding. The Cape Fear River is flooding at Elizabethtown and farther up river. Hopefully the regional rains will come to an end and the rivers will return to normal. Today is day 3 of no rain! Stay tuned! Wednesday, August 13, 2003 Our town is very quite is morning. Motels appear to be better than a third occupied.* The Kure Beach Fishing Pier is standing tall in the sunshine as she stretches out over the easy rolling Atlantic Ocean. This morning, there appeared to be a dozen or so fishermen on her deck fishing. Speaking of the pier, the owner, Mike Robertson, has a "LIVE" wed cam that allows one to see the current activity of the pier. So give their site a hit at KureBeachFishingPier.COM for their latest fishing adventures! Today is day 2 of no rain! Stay tuned! Tuesday, August 12,2003 Well, I am glade to shout this, "IT'S NOT RAINING, THE SUN'S A SHINNING AND POMPANOS ARE BEING CAUGHT IN THE SURF!!" Pompanos, the so called "Butterfish", are showing up in the suds-of-the-surf here in Kure Beach. I like my fish broiled in the oven and seasoned with Old Bay seasoning, lemon, margarine, and a pinch of garlic. We do hope it stops raining so the streams and rivers upstate are allowed to return to normal. News reports out of Durham, NC tell of many water rescues in the neighborhoods. Anyway, hopefully the sunshine here will spread over the state like a BIG warm smiling face! Stay tuned! Monday, August 11,2003 8:00 am. Yesterday we took a 3 hours retreat in the afternoon and discovered what everybody else was talking about. The ocean water's temperatures chill factor has dropped 10 degrees or better! Last time this year, the water temperature was still rising! Newspaper reports that NOAA is investigating this phenomena . This morning, a fisherman fishing at the State park at Carolina Beach reports the catching of many Croakers and the sighting of several large deer along the river's banks. (Law says, "No hunting deer on our Island") Many schools have started back and we have seen a drop in the number of visitors. Stay tuned! Sunday, August 10,2003 Update!! 2:30 pm This just in. Many Black drums and Sheephead fish have been being caught in Snow's Cut today. Sand Flees are the choice bait for a retied NYPD fisherman. 8:00 am We had some fishermen from Sampson county in last night looking for live Clam. They were down a few weeks ago and caught their limits on Red Drum and many more Black Drum on Clam's mussel. They fished the north inlet of Carolina Beach. Also reported that on the outgoing tide was when they had their success. Gentleman and good customer from Fayetteville reports that the water's height of the Cape Fear River at Elizabethtown (NC) has past the river's banks and risen well into the tree's limbs. So in about 4-5 days that water will be here.* Stay tuned! Saturday, August 9, 2003 Well I hate to say it but, more rain today! Last minute school children's summer weekend is getting rained upon. Oh well, that life! In today's local Star-News paper, front page headline reads, "Big chill on the Atlantic Coast". It has a picture of a surfer riding a wave wearing a wet suit. Wet suit? Yep! I think all of the fresh river waters plus the Gulf Stream farther out than normal has put a "BIG" change in local ocean water temperatures around here. In the past, the water temps were in the mid 80's this time of year. Now the temps are in the lower 70's. Normally, that's early October's water temperatures. Local weather forecasters are forecasting that dryer weather should be here by this coming Wednesday. I will believe it when I see it! Stay dry! PS: Many great fishermen are releasing their catch of tinny little fish!! Now that's what I call a Great Fisherman! Friday, August 8, 2003 Longtime customer is amazed at the bronze color of the Cape Fear River's water. The Croakers he caught were too small to clean so he did the right things and tossed the fish back in. New kind of fish that making a showing is the African Pompano. To me they favor the cross between an Amberjack and a Pompano. The only people catching these monster fish are in a boat off-shore. Stay tuned! Thursday, August 7, 2003 Next week we are expecting our Fall line of fishing equipment to arrive. On the beach I have seen some folks giving it a try but most are only come back disappointed. "Scattered small stuff", is what many are saying. Its starting to sound like a recording. If I had to catch fish then I would take a boat that safe enough and head out to sea for about 12 miles or better. Stay tuned! Tuesday, August 5, 2003 Longtime native and avid commercial fisherman believes that it is going to take a two week drought upstate before his inshore fishing returns to normal. He remembers back in the mid 1970's that rainfalls upstate change the salinity of the ocean in Kure Beach which effected his fishing back then. Last night on the "Weather Channel" the weather (?) experts were explaining that an upper-level Low over lake Michigan and the Bermuda Hi over the western Atlantic were creating a rain trough from Columbia, SC all the way into Maryland and beyond. They do not expect a change in any weather patterns until these systems are moved along by the Jet Stream. (Not to be confused with the Gulf Stream). Meanwhile, ladies on there vacation are enjoying their new straw hats as they walk along the surf in hot sunshine as a cool offshore breezes provides them comforted. Stay tuned! Monday, August 4, 2003 Well we are getting many disappointing surf fishermen complaining about the lack of keeper fish. The water looks like "weak Ice tea" according to one gentleman. Local boater reports catching many Sheephead and Black Drum in Snows Cut. This morning we had a light rain shower. Stay tuned! Sunday, August 3, 2003 10:30 am Ice Run for Spots and Drink beverages! We have received several reports of a few Spots being caught off the surf and the Kure Beach Fishing Pier last night. Also many customers today saw people catching fish after dark last night . Stay tuned! Saturday, August 2, 2003 Update! 4:15pm Fisherman and his buddies purchase Ice for 18 or so good-pan-size spots. They reported that Kure Pier is doing Okay late at night and into the early morning. Sheephead fish are making the news on the pier. 12: 30 pm. Today a local fisherman reports a catch of Bluefish, Virginia Mullets and Croakers. The only problem was there were all too small to keep! Popeye mullets were seen swimming along the surf. In about six weeks, we will be filleting and salting down these fresh fat-bodied saltwater fish. The young man who was involved in the car/bicycle accident is doing well according to his friend! Stay tuned! Friday, August 1, 2003 Well the catching of fish has put several customers singing the blues, not Bluefish! We do here the occasional happy story but over all, catching fish as not been consistent from the surf at our location. Many customers are saying that after 10:30pm Kure Pier has a run of Croakers and Spots. For us, this has been the worst Summer for catching fish. Brackish rainwater has surrounded our Island. Sorry but that's all I can say at this time! Stay tuned! |
