Tuesday, Sept 30, 2003    Many locals are taking advantage of the    b e a u t I f u l   fall weather with their home and business maintenances.  Siding, roofing, painting, repairing and even "get this now", moving an entire 6,000 plus square foot motel from one side of 421 to the other!  Many of the painters and workers are from out of town and they seem to be excited about the surf and what's out there. The pier and beach have a few folks fishing but we have not seen any fish at this time. FISHING TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND at CAROLINA BEACH!! Stay tuned!

Monday, Sept 29, 2003  Well it was a beautiful slow day here in Kure Beach. Moon tides came over the beach and into the sand dune in front of the Blue Marlin at hi tide. Winds were out of the north-east this afternoon. Atlantic's water colors look fantastic for catching fish. What about Hurricane Juan hitting and Nova Scotia, Canada last night with 80 mph winds?  That's a first time I have ever heard of a hurricane doing that! Anyway fishermen and sunbathers are on the beach. Stay tuned!

Sunday, Sept 28, 2003   It's moon tide time again. That's when we get and extra 14 - 24 inches on the hi tide side and an extra 14 - 24 inches drop on the low tide. The 911 emergency dispatcher announced across the pager today that Canal drive in Carolina Beach is covered with SALT WATER and closed to thru traffic. Many Flounders and Spots are showing up, especially on the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. 11 ponder! WOW!  Icing down fish has been in big demand. Local fisherman reports that Virginia Mullets are here and the Black Drum are nowhere to be found. Winds here were mostly out of the east and coming on shore when I went outside. Folks are still swimming in the water without wet suits. Stay tuned!

Saturday, Sept 27, 2003    I am back!   This past week I was away repairing a home in Wilmington, NC along with our regular construction crew.  The repairs in Wilmington were not hurricane related. Karen held the shop together while I was gone during the long week days. One of her chores were to cleaned and split the backs of nearly 100 pounds of fresh saltwater Popeye's and salted them down. She did a fine job!

Pier and beach posses the most fishermen I've seen this season. Karen and the customers tell me that there have been several Spots runs this past week. Stay tuned!

Monday, Sept. 22,2003   Happy Autumn day!   Many Flounder and Red Drum were shown off today. The Flounder had the length, but were on the slim size. Ocean water colors are the true sea bluish-green that are a retreat for all sorts of local species of fish. No signs of any river water after last week's hurricane Isabel. Stay tuned!

Sunday, Sept. 21,2003   Many Fishermen showed up this morning to buy ICE for their catches!   Pompanos, Bluefish and Spots rounded out their treat. Our fishermen that catch Popeye mullets will start their regular fall season tomorrow!  Come this weekend, we should have plenty of fresh and salted, saltwater mullets, Shrimp, Squid and Bloodworms to! Stay tuned!

Saturday, Sept 20, 2003    We are sad to here the troubles and deaths that Hurricane Isabel caused along the Outer banks, Norfolk Virginia, Chesapeake Bay, D.C. areas and beyond. Yesterday we removed our hurricane shutters off all doors and windows. Wilmington and areas south of here only received a few strong wind gust and 2.25 inches of rain during the entire storm*. Over the past 18 years, Kure Beach has experienced the troubles and thankfully been spared any deaths of the past five hurricanes that made landfall here. Stay tuned!

Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 Well we are happy that the hurricane is passing. Here in Kure beach the winds never got dangerous. Kure Beach Fire department and New Hanover EMS rescued a FOX news reporter out of the Atlantic Ocean during the storms peek. He was taken to New Hanover Hospital. We plan to open our business Friday. Stay tuned!

Sunday Night September 14, 2003       Due to the forecasted size and strength of Hurricane Isabel, we are  making plans to board up our buildings. Our work Crews are coming in the Monday morning for boarding prep work.

Sunday, Sept 14, 2003  Well it has been a busy weekend catching fish!  Spot, Pompanos, Flounder, Bluefish and Trout are making a showing from the North end to the south part of the Island  AND here in Kure Beach.  Fishermen fishing the Kure Beach Fishing Pier have reported many catches also!        We are aware of Hurricane Isabel north of Porto Rica and the plus 160  MPH winds!. Within the next 48 hours we have a better picture of what our business activates we be this coming week.  Till then, it is business a usual. Stay informed!

Friday, Sept 12, 2003 12:30 pm. Surf is up this morning. Dozen or so folks on the Kure Beach Fishing Pier today. I noticed that both side of the pier were being fished. Reports of Spots and Trout are coming in. Stay tuned!

Thursday, Sept 11, 2003.  9:30 am Good morning on this very special memorial anniversary of 9-11!  Hope you and your love-ones are doing very well.

Just had our first report of many large size FlounderS caught in the area of Snow's Cut. Gentlemen was very excited about the size of these so called "door mats". For size limitations click here.  Hopefully this means the "fish catching / keeping" reports pick up in Our Daily Fishing Report web page. Stay tuned!

Wednesday, Sept 10, 2003 3:40 pm. THIS JUST IN.  Several Sea Trout have been reported caught off the very end of the Kure Beach Fishing Pier!  (NC Fisheries "keeper" rules for recreational fishing are a minimum length of 12 inches and the maximum take home count is 10 per day.) More details as they develop!         2:30pm.  A consistent rain fall began early this morning and still continues to this hour. Ocean waters colors are remaining the same. We did not see the plankton "glow" last night at Fort Fisher.  The "moon" tides are pushing up an extra foot of water or so along the coast and covering US 421 near the Fort Fisher Ferry Terminal. Moon tides happens every fall season, four to five days per month as the earth and moon pass thru the autumnal equinox. Stay tuned!

Tuesday, Sept 9, 2003 Local vendor and resident is frustrated with his fish catches this season. Like the comments of other locals, "The sea water salinity was way low this past summer and the so called, July-cool-snap change the outlook of the area the worst I have ever seen!" The Gulf Stream is also twice the distance off the coast also.  Stay Tuned!

Monday, Sept 8, 2003 No fishing reports to report today. Waters colors off Kure Beach are beautiful! Seas, 3 to 5 feet!  Stay tuned.

Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003 The Island of Bermuda took a massive hurricane hit Friday ! Four policemen are missing. <click here for more information> .

There are not many folks in Kure Beach fishing today. Local fisherman describes the atmosphere as "great sleeping weather". Last night a chill came over us from the drop in temperatures so Karen and I went looking for our fall jackets. Imagine that, after last weeks hot humid temperatures. Looking at the ocean this morning, I saw NO SIGNS OF ANY BRACKISH WATERS. The fist time since early July! Water colors are a mixed sea-gray-bluish-green with plenty of white caps. The colors we are use to seeing! Stay tuned!

Saturday, Sept. 6 2003   2:00 pm. Rain has settled in Kure Beach today. No fishing reports to describe at this time. Right now, the winds are not as strong as I had expected. The tropical low that is crossing the state of Florida is forecasted to pass 150 miles to the east of Kure Beach during the first part of the up coming week and continue to head out to sea. I hope that low pulls all the remaining summertime brackish water out of here. Stay tuned!

Friday, Sept 5, 2003  2:00 pm.  Hurricane Fabian is going to hit Bermuda around 6:00 pm today with winds clocked over 120 miles per hour! This is going to be a bad for the folks out there*. Bermuda, a 19-square-mile, self-governing territory of Great Britain has a population of about 64,000 people. News reports have waves over 30 feet tall hitting the beach now.      Here in Kure Beach, NC, the wave are up 6 to 11 feet tall 100 yards off shore and 3 to 5 feet tall10 to 30 yard off the beach*. Stay tuned

Thursday, Sept 4, 2003    Hay Dudes! The surf is up!    Well that's not my normal way to beginning a fishing report, but that phrase was on my mind!      On this quite week after Labor Day, game fish have been showing up more and more! Flounder catches 16 to 21 inches are reported in Snow's Cut.  Pompanos and Bluefish are a common in the clearer surf.  Speaking of the surf clearing up, the large swells, September rollers as the old-timers called them, are doing a good job of moving the remaining brackish water out of here.  During these conditions as a major hurricane bypass over 800 mile away, rip-tides and heavy under-tow are a DANGER TO ANYBODY NEAR THE WATER.  So plan ahead to stay alert!  We did have a rain shower today but it passed in about 7 minutes. Therefore, for us, today is day 11 of no significant rains. Stay tuned!

Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003   6:00pm. Update. Dental hygienist reports many Red Drum and Flounders caught at Riches Inlets near Figure Eight Island. I did not get a water report from her. I am guessing that the closest fresh water river is over 30 miles away. Yep, many folks here believe that the massive amount of rain fall has slowed catching fish down on the surf. The boaters fishing 5-20 miles off shore are doing much better. 11:00am  Hurricane Fabian is forecasted to miss the U.S. mainland. That is the opinion of the local weather forecasters and a big relief to us!      Last night Karen and I went down to Battle Acre at Fort Fisher. As the waves in the ocean broke, the natural phosphorus plankton glowed a bright bluish-greenish as it a traveled on the wave tops toward us. Very dazzling under the dark sky. This plankton is a natural part of marine life.     You may have heard that there is a large fish kill in New Bern, N.C. The heavy rains and pollution are to be the culprits. Stay tuned! Oh, today is day 9 of no-rains of any substantial readings!

Labor Day, Sept. 1, 2003 4:15pm    Well it looks like summer is trying to come to an end even though there are more than 20 days until the Fall Equinox on September 21. This past long weekend produced lots of small catches for many customer enjoying their last get-a-way for the year. I am hoping for a better fall fishing season. Early newspaper reports show that some saltwater oysters in the mouths of rivers of North Carolina are dieing due to so much summertime fresh water. Hopefully Hurricane Fabian will miss the U.S. mainland and move all this river water in the ocean out of here. For more information about the hurricane click here. Stay tuned!
