August 31, 2002 7:30 pm  Several Bluefish, Virginia Mullet and Red drum were caught in front of the Blue Marlin today. Not many folks down this Labor Day Weekend.   11:00 am  Reports this morning are many Bluefish, small ones to 14 inches long.  Flounder are making news. I don't know the official statistics, but since the North Carolina Fisheries put those spring restriction on Flounder, Kure Beach and the surrounding waters are yielding more and more large Flounder. That is just my opinion. Spot runs, September 15 thru November 15 is our PEAK season. I get a big kick this time of year! Many, I mean many families come down a for the sole purpose of filling their food freezers with all sorts of fine fish! Stay-tuned

August 30, 2002 UPDATE !!! There Back!!  Black Drum are being caught again. This time in schools. Local fisherman reports that several of his friends have been catching a few Black Drum over the past month, but yesterday and this morning catch count hit over thirty. As you may know, last year we rediscovered this great tasting fish. Average size may run small, so release but the ones that run over 10 inches to three pounds are fantastic!!  Black Drum may grow over 60 LBS. 2:00 pm Heavy rain showers are frequent as plenty of fish are caught. Customers are shopping for rain coats for venturing on to Kure Pier and the Surf. Spots, Croakers and a few Red Drum are the talk. Our computer tech customer and his lovely  wife are enjoying  catching and releasing their catches. We hope the rains showers find there way to places in North Carolina like Siler City, Chapel Hill, Winston-Salem, Mt. Airy, Hickory, China Grove, Faith, Gastonia  plus the many other drought stricken areas.

August 29, 2002  7:15 pm   This afternoon, Kure Pier had two large King Mackerels (20 and 30 pounds), a broke fishing leader and several Spots and Croakers.     10:30 am  Only report,  many little crabs caught at this time. Not much else going on. Know how the Maytag man must feel. Also we have had several inches of rain across the county.

August 27,2002  11:30 am  Happy Birthday to someone special!! Last night  Sea Bass, Spots, Croakers,  and Virginia Mullet  were some of the fish  caught off Kure Pier. 7:00 pm - 12:00 am. An annual customer who works on computers caught these. He also fixed our computerized line winding machine. Rain has set in again for us.

August 26,2002 11:am Spanish Mackerels were caught from the beach Sunday with got-cha plugs. This is starting to happen more often. Popeye's are in thick, "high count" as the summer season peeks. The price of fresh shrimp has fallen in the past week. If you like shrimp in your diet then now is the time to stock your freezer. Be ready to de-head and depose of waste.

August 24,2002 10:30 pm   Flounder was the talk of the shop again today as a few Dolphins bobbed up and down along the coast. No Sharks reports in the shop today. The heat index hit 108 F around 2:00 pm. Many swimmers were taking advantage of the cool 85 deg sea water in this high heat index weather. Schools of Popeye mullet are starting to show up. Hopefully we be able to start stocking in a few weeks. Its not good to buy fresh during hot weather unless they are properly ICE down immediately after leaving the 85 degree water. Most commercial fisherman can't keep large amounts of ICE in their small boats. No Ice, spoiled fish.

August 23, 2003 9:00 pm   Fishing Reports. This past week several swimmers came in an said  they saw a large fin and yes, they had seen the movie. When this occurs it is best to step as side. Lemon, Makos and Sand Sharks do come in occasionally, late August is when we have most of our sightings. Many Flounder are still being caught. School sessions, (you know, the place kids, children and teenagers go) are back in and the beaches of NC are mostly vacant.  Next month fish start swimming in schools.  In fact Karen and I got away last Sunday and spent some  so called romantic quality time on a pontoon boat. First time I tried one. It's like a car ride on a good old country road, only there is no dust. Take care and hope to see you soon!!

More computer interruptions errors! You have heard of hardware, software, shareware and underwear. Haven't you? Well, here may be a new one for you, Firmware. That is the hardware's software. Best way to explain is like this. A calculator (hardware) has buttons on its keyboard. And each key does a particular thing. Some add, subtract, multiply and divide. Well the buttons are programmed at the factory to do that one thing during the calculator's entire life.  The modem card, network card, USB card and ESP printer port card work in a similar fashion. They were programmed at the factory, "firmware", to be who and what they are. The firmware accepts the drivers that are sent to run on the device. Don't ask me how, but that virus we had, offset some of our firmware and messed things up, again! The virus worm was removed weeks ago, but the worm left holes in the firmware. Our new defense software detected this in one its monitoring modules. All these cards were replaced.  Hopefully that will be that!  Thought.?     I wonder if computers make good boat anchors?

August 16,2002 8:15 pm   No fishing reports to give at this time.  Not many folks from out of town this week. School has already started back in most areas of North Carolina by now. Our Indian summer usually starts in late October, after the first frost. Believe it or not that's only 9 weeks away. Frost? ......  " Want to thank Dennis, James and Wayne, the computer software and virus techs, who got our computers back up and running!!!."

August 15, 2002 9:00 am    Large Sheephead fish are being caught with barnacles in Snows Cut. These fishes have many teeth that are thick. Some folks say their teeth favors someone they know. Anyway Sand Flees, Sand crabs, Blue Crabs and even fresh Clams out of the shell make an excellent bait. Weather as been favorable the past ten days. Flounder, Blues and Spots here and there. Large Red Drum also.

Old subject, Guess what! That bad computer virus we had last week, mutated itself and we had a small relapse. Our new  Anti-virus company already sent us new virus definitions for the cure. When removing a virus, you have to learn the AV company's tools so you do not spread the "varmint"  to other areas of the computer.  Today, WORM_KLEZ.H is the number one computer virus destroying computer files. C-ya soon.

August 11, 2002 10:00 pm     With a brand new brand of Anti-virus software, and the grace of the Lord, we are back on line to give you up to date fishing reports as we here and see them. Most of our fishing sources are from guest staying in our apartments and customers who patronize our shop. Plus, I to venture out into the outdoors and report what I see and catch!  Here is the biggest dilemma in being a Bait and Tackle Shop proprietor. When the fish get to biting and jumping out of the water, we must man the shop and not the beach where we would rather be. Any way, life is good!!  According to my cousin and a regular customer, a small Bluefish blitz occurred this morning. What's a blitz you ask? That is when large schools of Bluefish, Spanish or Kings swim through and chase smaller fish right out of the water. Most of the time when you see a fish jumping, he or she is trying to escape a predator fish. In the fall of the year, large 20 - 25 lbs Bluefish can chase large schools of Trout  right onto the beach. Yes I have seen this twice in twenty years. Anyway, we hope no more computer problems. Stay tuned.   Oh, more and more Red Drum are being caught!

August 8, 2002  11:49 pm     We had a series of computer problems this past week. Hard drive and operating software errors.  According to Microsoft, a bad computer virus. MS tech support spent over 3 hours helping us get back on line. Our regular Anti-virus software was compromised.  MS tech ask me to run the free computer virus checkup at www.housecall.antivirus.com. Two virus files EXE were found. What upset me is our regular Anti-virus software is updated daily.

Weather has been cooler this week as Moms, Dad and kids take in the last weeks before school starts. Not to many fishermen down this week. Stay-tuned.

August 2,2002    Well the beach is packed with plenty of nice folks at this time. Some from as far away as Copley, Ohio.  Weather has changed several times since last update. Last night's electrical storm put several local fire departments on many calls. Sunburns have hurt several fisherman. Coolers have ICE, Virginia Mullet, Spots and Croakers are still making folks happy. I have not heard of any Flounder being caught , Yet!  Yesterdays fish stew with succotash was good!!  Oh, this morning we were blessed  with a cool snap in the weather!!  Stay-tuned!

July 30, 2002 6:00 pm  Mystery Fish at  the Fort ! Gentlemen fishing the banks of the Cape Fear River at Fort Fisher today  tells of some kind of strange fish (es) that keep cutting his minnows up while fishing. Later on he caught a large Flounder that was a keeper. He thinks the other hits could of been small Bluefish.  A common fishing mistake especially for Flounder is not giving the fish time to eat. Wait 15 - 25 seconds or more before you reel in.  Another fisherman went to the water park and stayed in cool waters of the rapids. He's OK in my book!!                 9:00 am.  Trade secrets: Many of our locals who work outdoors start around 4:30 am. Dawn starts "baking"   braking by then. The heat index is at its lowest point of the day. Quitting time is around 10:30 am for many. Others try to move indoors. Fishing reports from folks is about the same, Spots and Flounder here and there.  Virginia Mullet, Croakers and Pompano are still ending up in cools and heading back to the kitchens of Kure Beach. For the Sea hawks, (Big Birds) I have seen several of these caring 10 - 14 inch fish back to their nest. It is nice to see how nature works in the environment.  Stay-tuned and watch out for the heat dangers.

July 28, 2002 Update 7:00 pm  Surprise! No Rain here today!   Reports from the south end of Pleasure Island say there were quite a few  S U Vs on the beach today. Swimming and other bathing activities, I presume, was the highlight of the day. With that report,  several large Flounder were caught off the jetty wall that extends into the Cape Fear River. For one of our locals, Mud minnows seem to catch more than Popeye minnows. 11:45 am  No rain and fishing reports to tell as everyone seems to be packing up and heading back home on a very HOT Sunday morning!  Heat index is already above 110 degrees F. My good buddy had a water main to break at his business this morning. The plumbers came and  fixed the problem. Speaking of problems, the good news from Pennsylvania this morning encourages us all to have hope in the many trials and challenges that we face daily. Nine alive!! Stay-tune for more fishing reports and watch out for the heat dangers.

July 27,2002 Pompano are being caught in the high numbers again. These little "butter fish" so to speak, are great tasting. Number 5 fish hook baited with shrimp or sand-flee can catch a Pompano greater than 18 inches in length. The average size around here runs from 7 to12 inches.  Flounder catches seem to have dropped off according to several locals. Spots, Virginia Mullet and Croaker are still making news. Rain showers come and go. The lightning that come with these rains is sharp and bright. The thunder booms are LOUD!!

July 25,2002 Four King Mackerel caught off Kure Pier yesterday. 32 and 31 lbs top the chart.  Spots, Flounder, Croakers and Blue Fish rounded out the rest. From the surf, Flounder, Croakers and Virginia Mullet keeping several locals happy. Last night while I was cleaning out our food freezer, a package of Black Drum was discovered. These were left over from the fall of 2001. Fried them and yes they were delicious. We freeze our fish in salt sprinkled water for a fresh taste.

July 23, 2002  8: 30am Happy Birthday to a special person!!  Heavy Rains greeted us this morning. Two to three inches fell from 5:30 - 7:30am.  Usually this stirs up fishing activities. Stay tune!    For current weather report radar go to Current Weather in side menu.

July 22, 2002    6:30pm Not many fish catches to talk about today. One of our guest caught Pin Fish today. Hope they try the evening through morning hours. Hope to make a new fishing believer.  Head Boats catch Red Snapper, Grouper, Black Fish, Trigger Fish plus many other fish while the private charters catch the same plus King and Boston Mackerel when trolling this time of year.   Wish I could send some of these scattered rain showers we are having across our county, New Hanover, to the dry areas of North Carolina.

July 21, 2002   4:45 pm  Lazy day of Summer. Fishing reports are few, Besides, Sunday is a good day for rest!! Heat index hit 105 F. yesterday. Today seems cooler, 96 F. I was late getting in the shop these morning so I don't know how Saturday night fishing went. Quite at this time on Kure Pier. Family from Rowan County show me a picture of High Rock Lake taken from their local  newspaper.  Quotes say  that the drought of central NC is in now in its fifth year.

July 20,2002 Update 4:00 pm Many large Flounder caught in Carolina inlet by boater this afternoon with Mullet minnows.  Update 1:00 pm;  Locals braving the heat for more Fish. Flounder limits, 8 per day set by  the NC Fisheries.      Noon   Many locals are reporting many large Flounders caught. 18-24 inches in length. 4:30 am to 8:30 am seems to be their favorite time to catch Flounder. Kure pier and banks of the waterway are the top choices. Virginia Mullet, Spots, and Croakers are still biting also. HEAT index is high during the daylight hours, that's why it best to fish during the night. While I was crossing the Cape Fear River Thursday morning, I saw several boater  fishing around pilings for Sheephead Fish. Sheephead are common in Snows Cut and around Kure Pier.

July 17, 2002 10:40 PM  Flounder are being caught in Snows Cut, State park and along the water way of Carolina Inlet. Rains have subsided and the sounds of lawn mowers and weed eaters are common in the early mornings and evenings hours. Heat index is high by 9:30 am. Gentleman from Mount Airy tells us that he has not use his mower in 6 weeks. Now back to fishing, Spots are showing up more and more. Virginia  mullet and Croakers are around. Several summer small Sharks ( 18-27 inches) have taken interest our shrimp bait. Misquotes are out, but not in the high numbers. See there is always something  biting here in Kure Beach. C-ya soon.

July 14,2002 11:15 am; Rain, Rain and more Rain. Ducks and frogs should be happy, many guest are upset because of the drought that is occurring back home in the mid and upper portion of the state of North Carolina. Many small Sand Sharks landed. Many Virginia Mullet and Flounder are going home in coolers back upstate. At this time, skies are overcast. Kure Pier fisherman report Kings and Spanish have been caught. Stay tune!!

July 12,2002 12:20 PM; Rain in the bright sunshine as entertained our guest several times this  week. Heat and humidity have keep everyone company. The beach waters are nice for swimmers and surfboards. Not many fisherman in shop today. Stay tune and stay cool!

July 9,2002    8:30 am;   Morning Swim in ocean was nice!!  A Small amounts of sea grass was scattered along  the surfs edge. Karen and I had the beach pretty much to ourselves. Most folks came down last week and now the town is experiencing a solitude time. Several of our retired residents were waiting at the our Shop to go fishing when we returned. Shrimp, Mud Minnows and Squid make the perfect bait! Best of success gentlemen!

July 8,2002    5:45 pm; Ask several of our local's about there fishing adventures. " Do not have time to fish today, must go to work!!" was the main response. Yes even people who live at the beach have to work. Besides, it's good for you! (they say) All play and no work and you forget what the fun times are!!  Well, that's all I can say at this time. Stay tune.

July 6,2002   "Another Saturday and night and we ant got no..." empty coolers. Sorry about my singing, but  here is what happened the past 24 hours. God in heaven put on a tremendous lighting storm on last night. Must have stirred fish up. It sure stirred up us!! Dolphin, the fish, made several appearance today. They were caught off shore. 10 Lb bag of Ice can only go so far. Flounder, Sheephead, Croakers and Virginia Mullet got Iced also!

July 5, 2002   10:15pm Update!!   Sheepheads are back in news off Kure Pier, Spanish Max caught with Got-ch plug....     B I G   B A N G   Theory II     Fireworks bought in North Carolina don't have as much gun powder as Fireworks bought in South Carolina!!  Guess you can say it's not a theory but the N.C. Law!!  Best time to catch Flounder and Virginia Mullet is morning, evening or during the night. Cary your bug spray, but keep the spray off your tackle and bait !! Bug spray repels fish.

July 3, 2002  5:00 pm UPDATE. Customer ask, "how do you dress a Flounder?" Well there are a few way to do such a task. One, take them to a fish house and they will dress them for a small fee. Two, scale fish on both sides and gut with 6-8 inch knife, then cut into steaks, That's our favorite way (bone in). Or, scale, then slice down to the back bone without going through bone with scarped knife, then from this middle slice, lay knife sideways and work knife to the side fins. Bone out if you did this right. Bake, fry or grill. Enjoy!!  Fish are good and good for you if cooked properly....        Local  Fisherman are catching Flounder off Kure Pier, Again!! Mud Minnows and Popeye Minnows are the top choice! 2, 4 and 5 pound Flounder are making several of our customers happy!! Many of these are caught between 6 - 10 am. The beach population of beach goers has risen along with the temperature. Stay cool and have a safe holiday!!

July 1, 2002  This past Saturday night, my nephew tried fishing salt water for the first time. He did OK!! Several Virginia Mullet make a nice meal, however since supper time was over, our shore line adventure made the perfect after dinner rest. We released fish back into water. Other catches, one Pin Fish. We passed. Lots of couples walking in the moon light on Kure Beach. No weddings like in the past  three week.

June 28, 2002 This past week has been slow. Looks like there is a Bloodworm war going on. Prices that is. Customers are telling me $3.90 - $5.50 per ten pack. Spots, Croakers, Sand Sharks  and Pin fish, oou! Not many folks down either. Hope stock market ride is not hurting too bad!  Hang in there!

June 23, 2002 Yesterday, like the entire week, heavy rain showers keep several of our regulars indoors. Sea weed grass is appearing on the surf in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments. Croakers, Spots and Flounder are being caught by the few fisherman fishing. We are thankful for the rains and hope everybody else up state is faring well. Smoky Bear reminds all that we can stop Forrest fires!! Stay-tune.   Oh! Another wedding yesterday!! Love is in the air.

June 20, 2002 Fresh load of Mud Minnows delivered this morning. These minnows seems to be chubbier than the previous batches. Many Kings  have been caught off Kure Pier. Rains have cooled things down a bit, not bites. Flounder are still making it to many a home table at supper time.

June 16,2002   Several variety of fish have found their selves in cooler

Spanish and Kings to the surface off Kure Pier. Croakers and few Bluefish are tagging along. Our hottest seller is head off Shrimp and Bags and Bags of Ice. 89 cent for a Cold 10 ponder. Flounder are still in the news!!  Best we can tell Summer is going to be hot. Remember, its still spring!!

June 12, 2002
Mud minnows  on a #4 Wide bend hook of been pulling
in their fair share of a
Flounder for the past two weeks. Several legal
sized catches have made  their way to the frying pans this past week.
NC Fisheries gave us a set of regulations that seem to change ever week.
Currently, 8 Flounder maximum may be caught off Kure Beach, NC
having a minimum length of 15 1/2 inches.

WINTER AND SPRING at the Blue Marlin Apartments and Beach Shop.       We had a tremendous set back this past winter, Our Oceanfront Apartments have been invaded by termites and the foundation post that the building sits on are decaying. Plans to replace foundation will began in late fall 2002. We were late opening up our shop because of this unexpected discovery.

On the brighter side, Karen and I made new friends at Topsail Beach, NC. Pastor Don Meyers and his family are inspiring. A lecture at UNCW pertaining to the publication of the RSV Bible in 1953 changed the Christian world in America.

Around the store, many chores and maintenance were completed.
