Sunday, June 28, 2009 Triathlon was held today in Kure Beach. From what I understand this was a series of activities, Running, Bike Racing and Swimming in a timed competition. It was very exciting to watch the swimming portion of the event right in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments. My estimates, more than 300 participates. * No fishing reports at this time. 6:00 pm. The summer solstice of last week, this week's new moon along with the sun's alignment caused this unique phenomena. Tide table Saturday, June 13, 2009 Large Male Crabs have been caught by several groups today. Flounder reports continue to come in. The beach was a very nice today. Tide table Friday, June 12, 2009 Weather folks are saying there's suppose to be some sever weather showers over the next 20 hours. Right now, 9:30pm, all is clear. Big Flounder had to be "walked" to shore off the Kure Beach Fishing Pier today. This made a believer out of many meaning they too went and wet a hook. Snow Cut was doing okay for another fisherman. A big one was reported off the Carolina Beach Fishing Pier. On Kure Pier today, we saw approximately 60 people on her deck. Birds were not as thick front of our place as they were on Tuesday, but a few were still feeding about 50 yards off shore. Water colors are pretty. Devastating news! Family lost their mother this past week. She got caught up in a rip current just north of our shop last weekend and later died of complications. Stay tuned! Gas prices, $2.53 - $2.57 and up. Tide table Tuesday, June 9, 2009 Well there was some excitement just off shore today. Dozens of birds, including those magnificent Brown Pelicans were diving in and having a feast from L Avenue back to our apartments. Fisherman told my wife he caught a very large Virginia Mullet on the Kure Beach Fishing Pier today. He was using a homemade Catfish Rig and a Shrimp. Stay tuned! Gas prices, $2.48 - $2.52 and up. Tide table Monday, June 8, 2009 My physical therapist reported during my am "workout" he caught several Croakers yesterday at the "N" avenue crossover. His buddy fishing in a private harbor north of Snows Cut caught several Flounder off Mud Minnows. Long medical brake! Hi Everybody, Last week was one of those weeks were much time was spent in bed. Sunday, May 31, 2009 Unfortunately, fishing report continue to be very weak. While enjoying the view with my very on crutches from one of Kure Beach's many ADA viewing stands, several fishermen reported, "The water is a sea-green-blue with clean white caps, but no fish seem to be around. Fished all day and got a big goose egg" meaning O fish! I mentioned to them the winds have blown from the south-southwest over the past four days. Other beach goers took advantage of the "Lobster Look". You know, no suntan lotion for me. Looked as if the British Red Coats were back. Kure Beach's mayor emailed us saying the state was assisting in life guard funding for the Fort Fisher State Park. Stay tuned! Gas prices, $2.35 - $2.42 and up. Tide table Thursday and Friday, May 29, 2009 Fishing reports from the surf are bleak. We see several folks fishing off the end of the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. Winds have been coming from the southwest today. Other news: As part of the Federal Governments Economic Stimulus Package, Kure Beach along with many other beach towns will be forced to start there water projects in July of 2009. They have the options to pass, however this would miss the governments grant window of opportunity. Here in town, works are to begin July 20th on our town's main boulevard. Stay tuned! Tide table Thursday, April 23, 2009 Checking around this morning we find that strong winds have yielded NO Fishing reports time. (Hump-day, Wednesday-we were working out town) The high price of lead is pushing up the retail price of fishing sinkers. Our SRP is now at 40 cents per number. That's $2.00 for one number 5 sinker. Or 5 for $10.00. OUCH! We are hoping prices don't increases as forecasted by our restocking catalog. One more thing to pray for! FIRE DANGERS ARE EVERYWHERE IN SOUTHEASTER NORTH AND NORTHEAST SOUTH CAROLINA. Yesterday We put out a small road fire in Duplin County. The small but wind-tossed flames were at a crossed roads intersection. You know that area where it's very covenant for folks to toss annoying cigarette butt. News report out of Myrtle Beach are reporting 30+ home destroyed. Sounds like one of those horror stories from the west coast of the USA. Think safety and stay tuned! Tide table Sunday Morning, April 19, 2009 A very special "In-memory" day for me! Lady reported two fishermen caught two, fifteen pound Pompanos, in the surf yesterday. I mentioned to her if that's the case then a twenty-two pound Pompanos was hauled in last fall! She smiled and said, "Excuse me, I meant to say "Two fifteen inch Pompanos." :) Kure Pier had several fishermen on its deck yesterday. Today, Kure Pier reopened as they said they would. We saw about 7 fishing on the north side. A very strong southeast wind was blowing onto shore making the ocean choppy and muddy looking. Stay tuned! Yesterday we were taking care of business up in Duplin County. While we were there, we spotted big wild Turkey at three different locations. One big gobbler and two hens. Stay tuned! Fishing news: Here in town, fishing boats are spotted off shore this week. Several are bottom fishing about a mile out. No reports on the surf. Kure Pier is scheduled to re-open this Friday. Tide table Wednesday, March 25, 2009 Seawater temperatures are reported, 55 degrees. Today a cold strong east wind is blowing. From past experiences, Virginia Mullets and Bluefish "should" start showing up when water temperatures reach approximately 62 degrees*. By late April, Flounder, Spots and Spanish Mackerel should be showing up. "We hope so!", reports one local fisherman. "Our freezers are empty!" Today, friends and neighbors are upset with the cooler, wet weather. Skies are overcast. Ground, driveway and steps are wet. Looks as if we had a slight mist of rain in the early morning hours. Last Wednesday we sprayed all but one yard with a "KillzAll" herbicides grass and weed killer. Looks as if a good crop of Black Berries and hundreds of Artichoke vines have already started out "way ahead" of the Bermuda Grass. The Black Berry thorns are small, yet are very uncomfortable when they come in contact with bare feet this summer. We've got thousands of little butterbean weed seeds showing up all over the place!. The lady manager at "Farmers Supply" said, "There fixing to ruin your yard!" Three days have past since the spraying. Now the weeds and grasses are starting to get a yellowish-tint appearance. Tide table Thursday, March 12, 2009 Welcome Back! Temperatures varied this past winter. To me, last week and the first week in February were the coldest weeks. Ten days ago I had 3 inches of Ice in the back of my pickup truck. This past weekend warm sunny weather brought out many folks from Wilmington and other local locations. We had quests come in from Raleigh and the Fayetteville area. Last Saturday, local restaurants were packed with visitors. Temperatures were in the mid seventies. Birds were feeding in the yacht basin at Carolina Beach. Virginia Mullet Fishermen were about 3/4 of a mile out "trying" to catch fish. They have not returned this week.
