Memorial Day, 2005     On this special day for our fallen armed forces personal, hundreds and hundreds of citizens are concluding their Memorial Day Weekend Vacation. Several folks are caring back coolers filled with Flounders, Bluefish, Virginia Mullets, Dolphin, Spanish and King Mackerel just to name a few.  A gentleman chatted with me today about his fantastic fishing trip out to the Gulf Stream and how his crew maxed out on the Dolphin count. He described the weed line. The weed line marks the western wall of the Gulf Stream. Presently he reports it is almost a mile or so wide.  The weed line originates from the Sargasso Sea and looks like tinny grassy islands floating toward the northeast. Traveling at 25 knots, it took his crew two and a half hours to get there. (Approximately. 65  miles) As one travels east this time of year, the sea water temperature rises at the weed line about 10 - 14 degrees. This is due to the presence of the warm Gulf Stream. (Yep, this is what keeps England warm.) Sea turtles, crabs, ells and new born minnows hide in this grassy haven. Dolphin love to hunt the weed line for food. As the Dolphin twist and turns, the neon greenish/yellow bodies light up the water. A few summers ago, a storm came through and broke up the weed line. Much Sea Grass wash up on shore here in Kure Beach. I remember swimming in the ocean the first week of October. The water temperature was in the 80's. Yes! Me swimming in the ocean in October. Stay tuned!

Sunday, May 29, 2005     I am estimating, more than 3,500 visitors are in Kure Beach today. At times, traffic will backed up from the stoplight all the way to the Old Dow Intake, that's more than five blocks. Mild heat wave hit here around 2:00 pm. Minnows are catching Flounder and Bluefish in the surf. Stay tuned.

Saturday, May 28, 2005     Triple grand slam today. 3 Flounder and 3 Bluefish were caught today on our Live Mud Minnows along with 3 Virginia Mullets. ( I assume the VA mullets were caught of shrimp or sand flees). That was the catch of one happy fisherman today. Several others have experienced similar joys. Stay tuned

Friday, May 27, 2005     Many motels have their "No" vacancy signs turned on. Several customs have hi expectation for catching fish . They are wishing to restock there freezers. Word has gotten out that Spanish, King Mackerel and Bluefish are here. Stay tuned.

Thursday, May 26, 2005     This afternoon, warm weather returned to Kure Beach. Believe it or not, we woke up with our heater running. Very chilly these past two mornings. This afternoon, Kure Pier reports Bluefish and Virginia Mullets. Stay tuned.

Wednesday, May 25, 2005    Repeat action on Bluefish today. ( 2,4, and 8 pounders) Many customers maxed out on their limits. One fisherman enjoyed catching so many Bluefish on Gotcha plugs that he gave his fish away so to keep his cooler count below 15. A lady angler mentioned that her  brother-in-law dose not know how to enjoy Bluefish. She cleans and tosses the fish's guts back into the ocean before she leaves the beach. This get 99.44% of the strong blood out of this fine fighting fish. An excellent dinner.  (NC fisheries rules require the fish's head remain attached while in the outdoors! )    Spanish Mackerel, Virginia Mullets and Black Drum made a showing today. I asked a local fisherman about the fish run. He said, "This springs cooler that normal water temperature has brought all these fish in close". I suspect that Flounder are going to start showing up in Snows Cut. Stay tuned.

Tuesday, May 24, 2005     Big size Bluefish caught on Kure Pier and along the surf. Some over 8 lbs. Spanish Mackerel and a few Kings made the news today. Seeing fishermen dressing several large fish and packing them in ice is a wonderful site. Red Headed Gotcha Pugs are the most popular lure. Cut mullet and shrimp are doing Okay.

Monday, May 23, 2005     Last night, we tried to ride down to the south-end-boat-landing. We could not make it past the ferry landing because the water in the bay was covering U.S. 421. Looked up into the sky and discovered that it was full moon. We did see fishermen loading up their boat along the highway just a few feet past the ferry entrance. The regular boat landing was covered with saltwater. Croakers and Spots were plentiful in the bay. Back in Town, Pompanos, Bluefish and Black Drum were caught all along the surf.  Stay tuned!

Sunday, May 22, 2005    Black Drum Saturday! Several Black Drums where caught yesterday along the surf in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments. (4.75 and 5.0 ponders). Today the sun is back out. Yesterday we had rain and little cool snap. Stay tuned!

Friday, May 20, 2005     Physical challenged fishing tournament this morning at the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. Results to be posted. Last count, more than 225 participants. Stay tuned!

Thursday, May 19, 2005     Happy Birthday to someone special! Lots and Lots of Bluefish, mixed in a few Spanish Mackerel and you have got a great fishing adventure. Kure Pier reports that Plugs are working fine on these fine fighting fish.     Got an email comment of farmed raised shrimp last night. After he gave me the okay to publish, this is what the gentleman said. "

I don’t know how different they taste as I do not eat Shrimp but I have started using....[farm raised from other countries] for bait when I go to the outer banks & there is not any “FRESH” Shrimp available. Many times when the weather has been bad the local boats can not go out fresh shrimp is extremely hard to find.

As for bait, it will last longer without having to “salt it down” than fresh shrimp & I have caught plenty of fish when using it. It is definitely better than frozen or salted that you buy. I can keep it dry on ice twice as long as fresh without it getting soft or discolored.

So, you can see that this kind of shrimp is going to be around. Stay tuned!

Tuesday, May 17, 2005     Farmed raised Shrimp. What, where and why? The use of farmed raised shrimp has increased to the point that the NC Fishers have made it mandatory that all seafood retailers must disclose to the public whether the shrimp one buys for human consumption is in fact from the ocean or farmed raised. This industry began in Central America, Philippines, and other parts of the tropics.   From what I understand, "shrimp ponds" are where the shrimp are raised. Today, farm raising shrimp has now spread into the United States. With the high cost of fuel, environment and sport fishermen's disputes, I can see farm raised shrimp increasing. Many customers complain saying that farmed raised shrimp do not taste like shrimp caught in the salty ocean. Stay tuned!

Sunday, May 15, 2005     This just in today. Fisherman's post at www.fishermanspost.com is hoisting a fishing tournament this up coming weekend at Carolina Beach. For more information log on to their web site or call Gary Hurley at 910-452-6378. Sold a few bag of Ice for icing down fish, but not the number we would like to see. Pompanos are showing up. Sand flees have returned. They make a great bait. Charter boat, fishing 40 - 60 miles off shore, are landing Tuna and Mackerel. Stay tuned!

Saturday, May 14, 2005     Virginia Mullets, Bluefish, Red Snappers, Black Bass and Flounder were the reports that came in today. Seas were a bit ruff for some while others prospered. As I rode around tonight, I did not see a single Vacancy at any lodging establishment. If memory serves me correctly, this was the first time the NO Vacancies signs have appeared since the hurricanes that loomed over the southeastern United States of July, 2004. Stay tuned!

Thursday, May 12, 2005     Warm weather is here! Today "Ole Glory" was showing us that the wind was coming from the south. The weather forecaster were forecasting rain but that did not happen. Our regular Flounder fisherman did not do to well today but that is not stopping him. He plans to hit the surf tomorrow. Kure Pier fisherman caught a few keepers today. Mud Minnows are the perfect bait for Flounders and Bluefish. Stay tuned.

Wednesday, May 11, 2005     Well, it finally happened! Air conditioner came on today. As Karen price our new line a beach toys, the good ole AC came on. Now fishing reports. We had some repeat customers come by today for some more shrimp. Apparently these gentlemen were catching lots of Bluefish, while others came in empty handed. Suntan lotions of SPF 15 & 30 were hot items. Stay tuned!

Monday, May 9, 2005     Virginia Mullet reports are still coming in. Weather has warmed up compared to last weeks cold snap. Yesterday, our live minnows arrived in good fashion. Hopefully folks will discover that Flounder like our live minnows. Stay tuned!

Saturday, May 7, 2005     Happy Mother's Day Eve! Well Kure Beach came to life today as dozens of folks came down to soak up some long-lost-overdue-sun rays. By nine o'clock this morning, folks were actually lined up in front of our store waiting to get bait. Shrimp and Frozen minnows were our biggest sellers. No one has reported back so I will have to wait to find out the results tomorrow. Did not see any surfers on the beach, but we did have several sightings of bikinis. Someone ran off some figures but I could not make any since of it. 33-26-36. That adds up to a negative 29. How is that a good looking figure? That sounds like my checking account balance. Stay tuned!

Friday, May 6, 2005     SNOW ? Not here in Kure Beach. Fishermen from Mt. Airy today report that last week they came out of a auto parts store only to find themselves in a spring snow fall. Today in Kure Beach, there is a northeast wind blowing. This time of year, Spanish Mackerel, Blue Fish and Flounder will come close in to feed after a NE blow. Gotcha plugs are popular for catching these fish. Stay tuned!

Thursday, May 5, 2005     North east wind blowing again today. This time there are cold rain drops included. Warm Weather is forecasted for this Saturday and Sunday. Oh! I forgot to say that the 2005 tide tables (paper) are in our shop plus I forgot to update our web tide tables for 2005. Stay tuned!

Tuesday, May 3, 2005     North east wind blowing today. Stay tuned!

Monday, May 2, 2005     Great news! Boater rescued off Oak Island yesterday. They had boating problems last Wednesday just off shore of Charleston, South Carolina. Other news this morning, a cool front came thru town creating fog. Visibility drop to about 100 yards before the sun was able to clear things up. Bluefish and a large Flounder have been reported from the rocks in front of the Riggins. Stay tuned

Sunday, May 1, 2005     Good weather yesterday brought out several fishermen. Virginia Mullets, Blow Fish and Flounder top the chart. At the bay, south end of Island, kayaks and wind sails were everywhere along with Jon boats and Carolina Skiffs. Stay tuned.

Friday, April 29, 2005   Tiny sand gnats are all up and down the beach today. "No-See-Them" is what locals call these little pasty critters. Virginia Mullets and Croakers are here. Spanish Mackerel are being caught just off shore. Stay tuned!

Wednesday, April 27, 2005     Boy! You can not beat the taste of fresh fish. Our guest caught some nice size Virginia Mullets today.  They are having them for supper tonight. It has been a while since we smelled the aroma of fresh fried fish, vegetable greens and Irish Potatoes cooking at the same time. Stay tuned!

Monday, April 25, 2005     Steady Southwest wind has a chill on our beach. Virginia Mullets and Skates are showing up. Stay tuned!

Sunday, April 24, 2005     Fisherman's Knot. 10 Times, Yep 10 Times! I can "knot" say why but ANDE fishing line will break at the snap swivel or hook if it is not looped 10 times. The standard fisherman's knot of looping 7 times pops.  Other fishermen and I have been looping 7 times since our youth. ANDE fishing line holds up great and has great flexibility away from the knot. Please respond at fish@blue-marlin.com  I want to hear what you have experienced.  Red Drum are here. Virginia Mullets are a good size 12 inches for this time of year. Bluefish are starting to show up also.  Stay tuned!

Friday, April 22, 2005     Warm sun shine has brought out the swim and beach ware here in Kure Beach. Sunbathers are catching lots of warm rays. Several fishermen have been reporting that the Virginia Mullets are being caught here and there. The commercial fishermen are way off shore fishing. I see them working their nets in the company of many pelicans and sea gulls. Kayakers are past the Kure Beach Fishing pier. Stay tuned

Thursday, April 21, 2005     Tuna and Large King fish off shore. Virginia Mullets are showing up daily. Spring time weather is starting to make a habit of showing up. Stay tuned!

Friday, April 15, 2005     Skates and Blowfish is the best reports I can say for now. Many fishermen are asking me "When are the Virginia Mullets going to start?" Well the best I can say is shortly after this late winter weather goes away. Sorry but that the best I can report at this time. Stay tuned

Thursday, April 7 2005     Big rain shower past off shore this afternoon. This time of year, the rain is very cold. We got our first batch of Canadian Night Crawlers and Red Worm in today. Until something happens, stay tuned!

Wednesday, April 6, 2005     Well folks are calling in an asking us what has happed to the daily fishing report? Well we have had nothing to report over the last 3 weeks. Unfortunately, several of our local fishermen died this past winter. We miss seeing them and getting their reports. Once I can get use to the new software and other computer issues, reports should be coming in on a daily basis. The local newspaper reports that Shad are making a comeback and begging to run in the Cape Fear River. Stripped Bass along with Hearing should follow. Kure Pier has been open for almost a month. Spots, Bluefish, Flounder and Virginia Mullet should be here on a regular basis within the next 10 days. Stay tuned!

Tuesday, March 15 2005   Well were are back and looking forward to a good season of fishing and fun. Our winter was milder than we expected. No snows to speak of but there were a few cold nights in the upper teens that had grabbed us in it's grip. North end of Pleasure Island now requires a vehicle pass to venture out. $40 per year or $10 per day. South end of Island has the same fees. The north end of the Island is controlled by the Town of Carolina Beach while the south end of the island is controlled by the State of North Carolina. More facts and figures to follow. Stay tuned!
