Farewell till Spring 2006UPDATE January 12, 2006 BIG STRIPER TAKES TOP SLOT MOREHEAD CITY – In the waning days of 2005, out-of-state angler David N. Hiebert hauled in a monster striped bass, breaking a 34-year North Carolina record. On Dec. 30, Hiebert, of Scotts, MI, landed a 62-pound striped bass that was 53.5 inches long, with a 32-inch girth. Hiebert caught the big fish in the waters off of Avon aboard the vessel Triple Crown. The boat’s captain was David Bronson of Apex, N.C. The state-record fish was weighed-in at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center in Dare County. Catherine Willis held the previous striped bass state record for a 60-pound fish she caught in the surf off of Hatteras Island back in 1972. In 2005, anglers landed five record-breaking saltwater fish in North Carolina. Derek Williams of Tampa, FL, caught a world record 21-pound, 6-ounce hogfish snapper off of Frying Pan Shoals. Another world record was broken when Frank Ballas of Indiana, PA hauled in a 4-pound, 5-ounce sand tilefish in the waters off of Oak Island. Brandon Bailey of Moneta, VA, caught a 185-pound thresher shark off of Oregon Inlet and Jesse Lockowitz of Carteret County, N.C. broke the tarpon state record, landing a 175-pound fish at the Bogue Inlet pier. For more information about state record fish, visit the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries Web site at http://www.ncdmf.net/recreational/record.htm or call Partha Howell at 1-800-682-2632 or 252-726-7021. Friday, November 25, 2005 Good crowed of folks down for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Lots of families too. Speckled Trout and Red Drum are making it to several fishermen's coolers along with Large Virginia Mullets. I have been doing a few chorus around here and have not been able to make it to the surf for a water temperature reading. Still fishermen are coming in for more bait. I got to reel in one Black Drum. Thanks Doug! This morning, the horizon had lots of big swells. The ocean water is not clear at all. Lots of sand and muddy water is being washed around in close and up to 200 yards out. Yesterday's rainfall here were more than what folks got inland. Dow road had water coming up to the edge of the road last night. Lake Park Boulevard around the lake is still flooded in Carolina Beach. We had a few customers come by for bait and tackle but no fishing reports. We went out to the surf and saw less than 6 people fishing on the pier and surf combined. Our guest checked out early this morning with a cooler load of 1 Red Drum, 3 Speckled Trout, and more than 3 dozen Bluefish. Not bad for two brothers. Winds are coming straight out of the northeast gusting 20 to 25 knots producing a cold wind chill. Everyone outside is wrapped up in jumped suits, toboggans or other winter gear. The guest who caught all the fish yesterday hauled in 17 Bluefish this morning in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments. Several were good sized. The beach has reshaped itself during this northeast blow. Water temp is up 1 degree. Two number 4's sinkers could not hold one tackle in place. After 6 minutes or so, the bait and tackle would wash back on to shore. This afternoon I went looking for some fresh mullets. The only mullets I could find where more than 70 miles away from here. Large row mullets at that. When I returned, our guest had gone back fishing. They caught two, 17 inch speckled trout, one 19 inch Red Drum and several small Bluefish. Water temperature is the same 64 degrees. Thursday, November 17, 2005 6:30 PM Fishermen were few and far between today, therefore no fishing reports. Yesterday, I met a gentleman in the city of Wilmington, NC. Black birds have mastered the art of catching Sand Fleas. Watching these "crow type" birds hop-walking across the surf poking for Sand Fleas as waves broke onshore while trying hard not to get their jet black tuxes wet was a sight to see. Spring like weather has returned. One could see a shower of rain falling about 8 miles off shore. Water temperature is back down 3 degrees. Kure Pier has a bunch of fishermen on the very end. I was talking to a neighbor and she tells me that she has pulled some of her summer clothing back out. George's sister confirmed this when she went in the water for sand fleas. She was not alone, one other lady was seen swimming. I suppose a swirl of Gulf-Stream-current got pushed in from way offshore. Unlike the parts of Canada at the same latitude, the Gulf Steam keeps England warmer during the winter time. Kure Pier only had a few folks fishing on the very end. Flounder and Bluefish were all being caught here and there. UPDATE 7:00pm
Four keeper Flounder, a large Virginia Mullet and many
Bluefish were caught today on the south end. To my surprise, there
are not many folks on the beach nor pier on this beautiful
Veterans'
Day
Holyday. The wind
speed is ZERO, water temperature is 66 degrees. Air temperature is 50 degrees.
The ocean and moonlight sky is absolutely beautiful. The last batch of
artificial Bloodworms had a white coat over
them. I thought they might have gotten into the sunshine and started to break
down. I called into Florida to see what was going on. I talked to the man who
makes them and he said, "We put extra corn starch on them so they would not sick
together. Once the bait hits the water, the starch washes off." So that's the
way they are now packing this new successful item
10:15am
Yesterday water temperature reading was the same as the day before, 68 degrees.
No one was on the surf. In fact, the only tracks I did see were
ghost crab
tracks. They were everywhere. No birds, dolphins or bait fish. Most of the day,
Kure Pier had a few fishermen bunched up at the end. This morning the crowed of
fishermen have returned. comment: Sorry about the delay in the fishing
report. Last night a friend was in town and I spent a great deal of time
with him. Had not seen him in more than a year. He and his wife are special to
us.

Several folks are coming in with a big Goose egg, O fish, while others fishing with minnows are coming back for more. Flounder in the Bay apparently love this fast action dark green wigglers. There were many fishermen back on the surf today. Kure Pier has a bunch of folks at the very end. Virginia Mullets and large Spot reports are coming in. I am rigging up our new water thermometer. There are more book readers and sun bathers than fishermen. At this time, I have not been able to get a reliable water temperature gage. Sorry! Yesterday afternoon, we were honored to have 20 or more Dolphin put on a jumping show. From what I understand, Dolphin may jump and splash hard on the water thereby creating a sonic splash. When smaller fish below the splash become disorientated, the Dolphin have an easer chance to feed. Some of these Dolphins were more than 8 feet long. Warm weather has returned. I am curious as to what the water temperature is doing. Rising or falling? What is a successful south end fishing trip? 40
Bluefish and 18 Flounders. That is what three
devoted fisherman caught last night. Got a cleaning table? Their bait,
live minnows.
Kure Pier fishermen had a good day for stocking up their freezers.
Many bags of Ice were sold today. The sun shine was just as bright this morning
as it was yesterday. This morning there were many folks on the surf and pier. My
temperature gauge malfunctioned so I could not get an accurate water reading. I
will get another gage tomorrow.

Friday, November 4, 2005 UPDATE 9:50 pm A fisherman came in stocking up on Bloodworms. He reports, " Not many fishermen on the pier but there are lots of Spots being caught. I caught a cooler full since sun rise! Bluefish ran early past sunrise." Yep! We got artificial and fresh live Bloodworms. 8:45 am Fantastic scenery on Kure Beach this morning. Blue skies and dark blue water. I only counted 4 fishermen north of Kure Pier to N avenue. The tide was cresting out. Beach sand had a light dew and many Ghost Crab Holes were showing along with Sand Fleas shells. About 75 yards off shore in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments, there were 15 or so Big Pelicans. Bait fish were there also. Kure Pier had fewer fishermen than the day before. Fisherman came in our shop yesterday asking about Hopkins lures. We only do special orders for Hopkins lures due to the high price of a slow selling item. The best way to get lures like these is to order online. That is what many locals do. I got a big Bluefish bit the night before last and I had no lure. While cleaning a cut Bluefish, 45 minutes out of the water, it bit the end of my ring finger. When the police arrived, they were following up the howling sounds of a werewolf in the neighborhood. I'm just kidding of course. I estimate the sea water temperature had risen about quarter of one degrees since yesterday. Many Bluefish were caught on Live Popeye Mullets this afternoon. Our Salt Mullets did fair but not as good as the live mullet minnows. Also, a huge Red Drum was landed. No word on its size, just huge! 10:00 am Fisherman reports that around sunrise this morning, he caught 15 Bluefish. Lady tells me her reel broke while fishing on Kure Pier. Spots and Long Virginia Mullets bit off and on during the night. Shrimp, Cut Mullets and Sand Fleas are popular baits. Mud Minnows are great for Flounder and Red Drum. Two Keeper Red Drums were hauled in off Kure Pier over the night. I have not been down to the beach to get a water temperature reading today. Plans are to go down this afternoon. Ocean waves are very choppy in this 20 knots northeast wind. Dark-dark slate blue water color with hundreds of white caps. Nine years ago it was the fulfillment of a dream! On the surf, close to the Blue Marlin Apartments. "Virginia Mullets are hitting Sand Fleas just beyond the last wave roll," reports one devoted fisherman. That's about 6 feet from the water's edge. Both Blues and VA Mullets are averaging 15 to 20 inches in length. Kure Pier fisherman reports he caught many Spots off and on all day. "If you hang in there you will do okay!" Reports of Trout catches in the bay are coming in. There are more than 2 dozen fisherman on the surf, north of Kure Pier with many rods in the water. While getting a temperature reading 50 or more minnows jumped up right in front of me.
