  1. Swim! No! Its about three miles wide at this point. Take a 25 minute N.C. DOT Ferry ride from Fort Fisher to Southport, NC. OR

  2. Head north to Wilmington, NC and then cross the Cape Fear River Memorial Bridge and head south back down the river. (Apx 1 hour.)

Orton Plantation Gardens Orton Plantation was founded in 1725 by 'King' Roger Moore, who came to the Cape Fear Region. This Old "Southern"  Rice Plantation catches the atmosphere of what the Old South may have looked like on a wide and lazy river.  Take a peaceful outdoor tour under old giant oak trees.

Brunswick Town and Fort Anderson Heritage and Historic land. Revolutionary seaport , Brunswick was raided, then burnt  by British troops in 1776. She was never rebuilt.  Fort Anderson was constructed atop the old village site in the early 1860's. Colonial foundations dot the present-day tour trail, which crosses the earthworks of the Confederate fort. Serene riverside setting, colonial and Civil War history. Maintained by the State of North Carolina Division of Archives and History. 

North Carolina Maritime Museum - Southport Branch
  Where was the first ship built in North America? Answer: At near by Bald Head Island,1629. Was Columbus the builder? No. Crews of Verazzan or D'aleion.  At the NC Maritime Museum questions and answerers are pondered over. 'All of the museum's programs and exhibits, both general and specialized, interpret the state's cultural maritime history and offer a larger national perspective on coastal environment and barrier island ecology.'
