There are a few folks fishing and a few surfers taking advantage of the pleasant 4 foot ocean waves. Kure Pier has a few people walking along her beautiful deck. We are very sadden and heart-broken to see the first TV reports from New Orleans, Gulfport, Biloxi and other towns inland and along the gulf coast. Stay tuned! Monday, August 29, 2005 4:00 pm No fishing reports at this hour. Rain shower have fallen off and on all day. In the past hour, hot and very humid weather has returned to town. The local weatherman is reporting that the non-dangerous upper level exhaust clouds from hurricane Katrina have reached into the central and western parts of North Carolina. Information you can use! What do the weathermen indicate when they say 30 foot seas? Well I called into a local TV station and asked a chief meteorologist. In the example of 30 foot seas in the Gulf of Mexico, one is referring to 30 feet above the mean water line. The worst news, if one is in a boat multiply that factor by 2. A 60 foot drop is likely from the top of the wave all the way down to the bottom of the wave's trough in 30 foot seas. On a calmer day like today in Kure Beach, for 2-3 foot seas, a 4-6 foot drop in a boat is likely. At 4:00 pm, it looks like New Orleans is coming out of Hurricane Katrina. The storm past just to the east of city. Stay tuned Sunday, August 28, 2005 2:30 pm Sunny skies and warmer weather is returning to town. We still have our AC off at home with all windows opened in the safety locked position. No fish catches to report as our town is welcoming visitors back after many days of rain. The weather and atmosphere is very nice here! * UPDATE 8:30 pm Category 5 Hurricane Katrina is going to be very deadly and destructive! New Orleans is below sea level so expect 4th story flooding. 175 mph winds will knock over the best storm shelters in her path. If you know anybody in the forecasted 100 mile path, plead with them to leave the area and watch the storm on TV. 275 miles minimum distance from the eye is where I would be. Tornados will spread 125 miles from the center of Katrina. If a Category 5 hurricane would come this far north to Kure Beach, many of us seasoned hurricane safety officials would pack up and leave 18 hours before landfall. If one stays and survives Katrina, you are not going to have safe water, food nor proper shelter for more than 5 days at point of impact. Roads, if any are left, maybe impassable for more than a week. Safety official are ordered to abandon any distress calls at the time of impact! This period may last up to 18 hours! You are on-your-own! I promise you, "STAYING AND WATCHING THIS HUMUNGOUS HURRICANE IS-NOT-WORTH-IT "! Best wishes! Stay tuned. Saturday, August 27, 2005 3:45 pm Happy Birthday to someone special! Lazy-rainy-day today. Not many, if any, folks on the pier or surf. A few fishermen came in this morning determined to catch some fish. "Fish do not mind getting wet in the rain, neither do we!" was their battle cry. At the present, no lighting nor loud thunder. Wish the folks along the gulf coast of the United States the best as Hurricane Katrina builds up her strength. Stay tuned! Friday, August 26, 2005 Noon: It's a quite town today. Thursday, August 25, 2005 Much cooler and windy today. The wind started last night. This morning, Snows Cut had many fish jumping. Looks like the Bluefish or Trout were chasing small Popeye's. At home, we turned off our air conditioner and raised our windows with the safety latches in placed. Not sure what happened to the weather forecasters in Florida. Two days ago, they all forecasted heavy rains. From what I understand now, Florida in having a dangerous surprise. Even TS Irene faked the weather pros two weeks ago. Stay tuned! Wednesday, August 24, 2005 2:00pm It's a ghost town today. Well it's not quite that bad. Our first fisherman reported back and he has asked for more shrimp. He is catching some nice sized Spots, Virginia Mullets and Croakers. No rain today. No sunshine either. Stay tuned Tuesday, August 23, 2005 No fishing reports today. Several rain showers have popped in and out all day. This keeps the outside air temperatures cooler than what we experienced last week. Stay tuned! Monday, August 22, 2005 No catches to report at this time (5:00 pm). Temperature was a bit lower than what we have experienced over the past four days. The moon at night is a must see event. So if you are free, come on down! Its later than you think. While gassing up my truck today, a stranger wanted to push their faith upon me by interrogating me. I thanked them and wish them well. I wonder, sometimes, if that approach actual works for fishers-of-men? Stay tuned! Sunday, August 21, 2005 Another intense heat blast is ripping the area today. Tarpon are reported just south of Baldhead Island. Report's say that the months of August and September are the peak season for this large game fish. On the Kure Beach surf last night, Flounders, Croakers, and Virginia Mullets were putting smiles of folk's faces while Sharks and the annoying Skate are teasing others. Around 1:45 pm today a fire broke out south of Monkey Junction. Myrtle Grove, Federal Point, Carolina Beach, South Wilmington and Kure Beach Fire Departments were all called in to assist in putting the blaze out. The air temperature at the time was way past 96 degrees. Heat index in turnout gear was past 125 degrees.* Stay tuned! Saturday, August 20, 2005 Today was the hottest day of the year here. At 1:45 pm, our thermometer read 103 degrees, in the shade. The heat index might* have been pushing more that 115 degrees. Low wind speed. Several persons passing by, plus a dog had to stop and come inside to escape the heat. Many sweaty red-faced, pale bodies were seeking an oases. A head boat showed of a fine catch of Snappers, Black Bass and other deep sea delicacies. Be safe and stay tuned! Friday, August 19, 2005 It was another hot, humid day today. We had several fishermen getting bait and supplies for tonight. Only had one or two rain showers today. Due to the increased rain fall this year the grass in the yards is the greenest and thickest I have seen in years . Stay tuned. Thursday, August 18, 2005 Today we had several rain showers. No reports. Stay tuned! Wednesday, August 17, 2005 We now have Sand Fleas for sell. They are frozen in a cup and we are selling them for $4.00 per cup. If I can sneak away to the beach later on this week, I plan to give them a try. One of our famous fishermen swears by them instead of at them. He uses a # 2 short shank Eagle Claw Fish hook. Short shank because he knows the Pompanos and Virginia Mullets have good eye sight. His motto, "If one sand flea can not cover the hook, then use two or more until the hook is completely out of sight." For some reason, the Sand Flea's shell will not get in the way of the hook barb as a mullet or shrimp scales have a tendency to. At 2:30pm, the heat-humidity index is up there. 96 degrees plus! Stay tuned! Tuesday, August 16, 2005 Past two days have been very hot and humid. Flounder have been caught underneath Kure Pier and along the surf. Live mud minnows for Flounder, Shrimp for Croakers and Sand Fleas for Virginia Mullets. Many of this past weekend's high surfing waves have departed the area. Sorry about missing yesterday's report. Stay tuned! Sunday, August 14, 2005 9:00pm news. Surfers are everywhere! This afternoon there must have been more than two dozens surfers north of Kure Pier. Not surfing on tiny 5 foot boards but the long 8 -11 foot surf boards. I saw one surfer standing on his board about 80 yards out with his hands on his hips looking out to sea. TS Irene is heading north and more than 400 miles east. She is producing many nice size waves in Kure Beach. I estimate the height of some of the waves, bottom to top, 6 - 8 feet. Fishing news: Did not see many fishermen today. We did sell several fishing combos to some fishermen from the North Carolina town of Troy, and from the states Virginia, New Jerseys and West Virginia. Stay tuned! Saturday, August 13, 2005 No surf catches to report tonight, The beach in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments was pack today with swimmers, sunbathers and book readers. Several small motor boats were trolling just off shore. There, Spanish Mackerel have been running now for quite a while. Stay tuned! Friday, August 12, 2005 Update 7:15 pm: Warm waters in the afternoon have the beach crowed with swimmers. I gave fishing a try but gave up and went swimming myself. The first 40 feet out, the bottomed was very uneven with holes everywhere. 11:00 am: A Spanish Delight! Yes it was, 69 Spanish Mackerel caught yesterday. Boat captain keeps the crew's catch below the NC Fisheries Rule of 15 Spanish per day per person. Others fishermen in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments are catching good size Virginia Mullets on sand flees. Next week, one of our bait dealers is going to put us in the frozen sand flees business. During the night, 20 Croakers were caught on shore on shrimp. "Folks! These fish make very tasty dinners!" Stay tuned! Thursday, August 11, 2005 Fishing reports varied today. One customer keep coming back for "Flounder-Minnows". I told him that we sold mud minnows not "Flounder Minnows". He said, "Well what ever, Flounder like-em!" Another fishermen was catching long Virginia Mullets and large Pompano until the children on the surf forced them to stop fishing. I told the fisherman he should have mentioned this to the life guards and the situation could have been resolved peacefully. Other news. Wednesday, August 10 UPDATE 5:30 pm Many "14-17 inch" VIRGINIA MULLETS caught at hi tide today. Sand fleas were the choice bait. Tiger Shark update. The Seven foot Tiger Shark that was landed on Monday, weighted in at 180 lbs. Speaking of sharks, today, another big fin was seen off the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. 9:00 am Over the past week, 6-8* inches of rain has fallen in Kure Beach. Today we had another summer shower. The only reports of anything jumping is the price of gas. Last week, regular grade cheap gas, (if there ever was any thing as cheap gas), was $2.199. Last night, at that same gas station, the price is $2.379. Ouch! Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, August 7 - 9, 2005 Somehow we lost a couple of days on the daily fishing report. Saturday we had a family man and his young men down. They caught 25-30 Croakers and Virginia Mullets after dark and into the morning hours. Sunday was a busy day for the Charter Boat fishermen. Red Snapper and Grouper were the big catch along with other deep sea fish. Monday was the big showdown. Fisherman hooks and lands a seven foot Tiger Shark on #30 lb test line at night on Kure Pier. The fight began on Kure Pier then proceeded all the way up to were Center Pier use to be and back down to where the Old Dow Intake use to be. From what we here, the Tiger was placed in the back of a Toyota Pickup and taken back to the rental unit and cut up into steaks for several family meals. Stay tuned! Friday, August 6, 2005 10:00am Croakers and Virginia Mullets are still being caught on shrimp at nighttime. Several Fishermen have been coming back for mud minnows. Flounder are biting on them. Folks fishing on the head boats are catching Groupers, Snappers and other deep sea fish. Stay tuned! Thursday, August 4, 2005 Citation time again! Just as this couple were about to call it quits, the lady angler catches a big 3 pounder pompano using sand flees. This morning, one of our guest reports that his family caught 23 Croakers and Virginia Mullets last night and into the early morning hours. Stay tuned! Tuesday, August 2, 2005 Cooler weather in the upper 80's have fishermen back on the beach. Croakers are the most caught fish, Virginia Mullets are followed. This morning, Kure Beach woke up to a rain shower. Stay tuned! Monday, August 1, 2005 Late afternoon yesterday, rains arrived. By 8:30 pm rains stopped. I returned to the beach after closing last night. Croakers were biting off and on from 9-11:30 pm. Also caught a Shark and a large Blue Crab. Just after dark the beach looked like a cross between a shopping mall full of folks at Christmas time and a high school playground. Several folks with flashlights were exploring what the sands at water's edge held and teenagers from all over the world introducing themselves to one another. One set of girls stood out. There were all the way from Austria. Very cute, polite and very inquisitive as they rummaged through my catch of fish. Stay tuned! |
