Sunday, July 31, 2005     No reports at 1:00 pm. Kure Pier looks good with all the fishermen fishing on the end of the pier. Dark rain cloud north of our Island never made it to us. Last night the wind was out of the south, today wind is out of the north. Stay tuned!

Saturday, July 30, 2005     "Rain-Rain go away, come again when we are not on vacation." Especially on a Saturday! Overall, there were not many folks out today. If it was not for the fishermen at the very end of the pier this morning, one would have thought the season was over. Then around mid-afternoon, folks started showing up. Being slow this evening, I went fishing behind the Blue Marlin Apartments. Caught several pan sized Virginia Mullets. All was well until we got a fire call at Carolina Beach.  Stay tuned!

Friday, July 29, 2005     Another beautiful day here in Kure Beach. Croakers, Spots and Flounder catches are here and there. Our hottest selling item is cold Ice. The heat blast of this week has subsided for the moment. The surf and sea water are proving to be favorable for fishermen and beach goers. Stay tuned!

Thursday, July 28, 2005     Beautiful day in Kure Beach. At the south end,  Fishermen casting his cast-net maxes out on shrimp.  I asked the gentleman how long they were. He held both hands up about 10 inches apart. This I had to see. Well, if one counts the long antenna with the heads attached then these "skinny" shrimp are 10 and 11 inches long. When you pop the heads of the shrimp off, you're doing good to have a 3 to 4 1/2 inch tail. I am just guessing, but its going to take 55 - 70 tails to make 1 pound of head-off shrimp. By next week, the shrimp not caught today, will be much thicker. 100 shrimp caught per day, per person and not to be sold, is the rules furnished by the NC Marine Fisheries.         I went out to the surf this morning around 11:30 am. The heat from the sun and from the sand, along with the nice slow moving ocean breeze, had a therapeutic feeling. Persons with arthritis and/ or breathing difficulties may find the surf very comforting. The warm humidity was nice next to the water. For fishermen and others, umbrellas are a must. Stay tuned!

Wednesday, July 27, 2005     Hot weather was in town today. Several fishermen down on vacation did catch several Croakers and Virginia mullets. Some reported seeing Flounder on the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. I did see a thermometer reading 98 degrees. At 9:00 pm, I got very clammy taking merchandise inside our shop.  Stay cool!

Tuesday, July 26, 2005    Sorry, no fishing reports for today or yesterday. Monday, there was a water incident up the road. A lady was rushed to the hospital's ICU unit after she was rescued from the water. I assume she was pulled from the ocean. Today there is a county wide heat warning. Heat index is forecasted to reach 115 degrees. Stay cool, stay tuned!

Sunday, July 24, 2005    Happy Birthday to someone special.      8:30 pm A fisherman looking for whole mullet stopped in this evening. He reports little activity on the north end of Island now know as  "Freeman Park". On a brighter side, he did catch many Popeye minnows along the surf. By Labor Day 2005, we are hoping to begin stocking local whole mullet. Stay tuned!

Saturday, July 23, 2005        8:45 pm  UPDATE  A heavy rain shower along with 20 to 25 mph wind gust past through here over the past 45 minutes. Several fishermen are heading out to the surf hoping to see what this rain shower might have produce.     6:00 pm Several fishermen have come in upset with their surf fishing. Not sure if there are too many folks in the water or what.     Boaters fishing 500 yards to 2 miles out are catching Spanish Mackerel. Stay tuned!

Friday, July 22, 2005     Croakers and Small Black Drum were the catch of one fisherman.     Kure Pier' Tackle House is getting a new roof topping.     A U.S. Marines Osprey Air Craft was seen flying north of Kure Beach.  Huu-rah!    Heat index busted though 105 plus degrees today.  Stay cool, stay tuned.

Thursday, July 21, 2005      Update 1: 25 pm     This just in, it's raining.  1:15 pm     Same ole story. No fishing reports today or for yesterday.     One of our guest gave up fishing on the hot surf and decided to take a cool dip. Being injured from a previous arm injury and in the company of his young son, the waters proved to be too ruff for an easy swim back to shore. He did the right thing by telling his son to stay calm and wait in the water with him. The Kure Beach Life Guards saw the man waving and their assistance arrived immediately. Stay calm is the safest defense in a water situation like this.    Stay calm, use your head, have fun and above all,  Stay tuned!

Tuesday, July 19, 2005    3:00 pm     No fishing reports today or for yesterday. Hot weather has returned making fishing an evening and nighttime adventure.     For the past 5 weeks we have been unable to purchase fishing sinkers. We are out of # 4s, very low on # 2s,3s,5s and # 6 sinkers. I will try to find out what has cause this lead shortage.     A scary sightings. Yesterday I noticed a person walking around with a laptop computer. Then he sat down outside on a bench in front of a motel. Later he came into our shop and I asked him if he was having computer problems. He said, "No problems, I was just looking for a business with broadband internet access. I was logging on to the world wide web using the motels wireless internet connection". Apparently, wireless internet is free to some while it cost others. The question I have to ask, "Is the motel's computer safe and what about the motel's information on all the guest." Stay tuned.

Sunday, July 17, 2005     8:40 pm:  Fishermen gigs over 45 lbs of Flounder without going over his limit. (8 Flounder per day per person.) Averaging more than 5 lbs each, this guy has something to talk about. One of the advantages of gigging is you get to chose which Flounders not to gig. When you come up to a small one, just pass over, there is always one much bigger close by.     When I ask a lady fisherman what was running on the surf? She responded with "Children, and there are hard to catch!"     Boaters have been  buying Ice for the trip home. They reported catching Spanish Mackerel, about 2 miles off shore today. Stay tuned!

Saturday, July 16, 2005     10:30 pm Something had the sea gulls and small birds diving in and feeding on leftovers close to shore this afternoon. Bluefish are the most probable fish feeding this time of year. The fisherman reporting this was upset because all of the swimmers and surf board riders on this crowed mid-summer weekend. He did not want his # 4 sinker striking anyone in the water.  Stay tuned!

Friday, July 15, 2005    9:30pm  Good news today! No rains and especially, no lightning! One gentlemen's Flounder catches have come up a little short. Several were 13 1/2  inches in length. He did the right thing by tossing the fish back. This year, the NC Fisheries established a 14 inch minimum and 8 per day regardless where one catches the fish. In the ocean or in the river. Stay tuned!

Thursday, July 14, 2005       8:30pm Tarpon catch was reported today from the Kure Beach Fishing pier. (32 Lbs) That the best news I have heard all week.  I saw several boats in and along Snows Cut this morning. Summer Flounder and Black Drum have a way of making a nice catch this time of year there.     All the lightning storms of yesterday were the talked about all day.  Lady reports that the house she saw looks like a giant fish scalar was scraped across the roof.. Stay tuned!

Wednesday, July 13, 2005     10:00 pm     Holding a rod and reel in hand plus standing next  to water was not appealing today. During several different storms, lighting and strong thundershowers fell on our Island. Several house were struck by lighting all across our county. KBFD responded to a house struck by lightning just down the street from our store. Other Fire Departments had multiple calls which put our fire department on an alert stand by.  Stay tuned!

Tuesday, July 12, 2005      4:00 pm     Hi humidity and temperature have made fishing a chore for some. Some of our customers are heading off shore to try their luck at gambling. Little River, SC has a gambling ship that heads out to sea. Once the ship get 3 miles past the shore, the ship's casino opens. Stay tuned.

Monday, July 11, 2005     9:00 pm   Happy Birthday to someone special! No fantastic fishing reports at this hour. At the north end, one group of fishermen gave up fishing and had a good time of playing in the surf. Just before 5 pm,  I went up to the Golden Sand Motel. This is where the old Center Pier use to be located. The only folks I saw were surfers and sunbathers. Stay tuned!

Sunday, July 10, 2005   3:40pm      Wish the folks in Western Florida and Alabama the best has Hurricane Dennis comes ashore.

Today was one of those special days. Children and parents of all shapes, colors and walks of life were in our shop. Questions after questions. Where do you catch fish? What is the best bait? How big of shark are caught here? Hop shapop quant dock mock tock? Were do we clean our fish? If I catch a big fish, do I win a trophy? Do we need a licenses to fish in the ocean?  Can I return this new rod and reel combo back when we go back home on Friday? Its fun and a challenge to introduce newcomers to the wonderful world of surf fishing. So come and join us.      We have a fabulous family from up north. They are back to have a wonderful summer, fishing vacation. They can not wait to try out the new lures and bottom rigs. All pail faced  and pail bodies today. Sunscreen is a must for these good folks.    Last night I noticed that mosquitoes were back. During the Forth of July fireworks festivities, the smoke residue from the bang and the onshore wind, ran these pesky criders off.     Several Flounder and fair size Bluefish have been reported caught of the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. Stay tuned.

Saturday, July 9, 2005     8:30 pm     Croakers and small Sand Sharks were the only reports coming in today. Several Fishermen were looking forward to our "legendary Salt Mullets". We explained today that live mullets are in seawater 82 degrees or more. By the time we get them in our shop, many of the fresh fish's scales have stuck together and the meat of the fish has turned into a soft jelly. It takes lots of Ice to keep fresh fish fresh. In 12 weeks we will be looking for our first frost. Stay tuned.

Friday, July 8, 2005     5:30 pm Today, the temperatures and humidity is very high. If it was not for the southwest wind, I don't think anybody could stand being out side. No fishing reports at this time. Stay cool!

Thursday, July 7, 2005     We are sadden by the news from London, England. Wish folks could work things out instead of do something wicked.

Sorry about the delay in fishing reports. This past week, I had a complete hard drive failure on our main computer. Still having problems.     Fishing News. Local fisherman said he was giving up fishing from the shore until the temperatures and tourist population drops off. Over the weekend, he was fishing at the northern of the Island, "Freeman's Park". A short fisherman from Mexico was casting a cast net greater than 20 feet in diameter. That's what is commonly called a 10 foot cast net. (10 foot radius). Anyway, this cast-net-er was catching Spanish Mackerel by the bucket-loads.  He was casting while wading in the water, not from a boat.  NC fisheries rules state that no more than 15 Spanish mackerel per day may be caught. The fisherman telling me this said,  "That short fellow was the best cast-net thrower he had ever seen. Chances are he learned this skill catching food for his family . Welcome to America, now learn our rules." Stay tuned!

Tuesday, July 5, 2005        9:00 pm     Pop, Bang, Boom followed by a Yooo, Haaa, Yooo were the sounds heard along Kure Beach last nights. Fireworks were all up and down the shoreline. Its a wonder anybody caught fish. Kure Beach Department did not get any calls last night.  Several of our finest did drive our new Mini Pumper around as good watch dog would.     Croaker along the shore line had delighted one family fisherman. He can remember when his dad carried him fishing. Fishing is a heritage sport. Bonding family and friends since the beginning of time. (Don't ask me to prove this, just take my word!) Today was a very hazy day. The haze went away when the temperature dropped creating an nice cool afternoon shower. After that we were all clear again     6:00 am Yesterday evening, I decided to ride my bicycle. As Chuck Berry would sing, "Riding along in my automobile,... with no particular place to go." Had so much fun with the small northeast wind to my back, I rode all the way to the boat landing. Well that not that far for all the Lance Armstrong's of the world but for me, it was a nice accomplishment. At the boat landing things seemed a bit odd. Several different groups of folks were having cookouts. The odd thing was that the tide was coming in and surrounding there picnic tables and grills. Several car were sounded by bay water, but none were taking on saltwater. As the sun set, a pretty panoramic scene developed. The sky remained light, while we on the ground began to be consumed in darkness. Being in darkness, I figured the safe thing to do was to call Karen and pick me and my bike up in our pickup truck. While I was waiting, several youngsters were exploring the bay. The rock wall was covered with bay water. Only in small places one could see the water breaking over the wall. Stay tuned!

Monday, July 4, 2005     Happy Birthday USA!     Let freedom ring!     Last night, the Town of Kure Beach was filled with the many sound of Fireworks!! All up and down the beach Fireworks could be seen shortly after sunset until the wee ours of the morning. Other news; Fisherman from the Charlotte, North Carolina area reports very large Cat Fish have been caught. Some Cats went longer than six feet.     Kure Pier and along the beach, hundreds of folks are moving about. The hi humidity, the crowed of beach goes, sunbathers and lookers are not what seasoned fisherman prefer. Many fishermen are going to wait until the evening to fish. Stay tuned!

Sunday, July 3, 2005     Noon     Get this! Patriotic Army Sergeant has to reminded himself that camping out is also considered a vacation experience. He came by this morning for a surf combo. Being out of "vacation-shape", I fixed him up a Carolina Flounder Rig and a package of Mullet Minnows. Not sure where he was heading, but pretty much anywhere is a good place to fish for Flounder, Bluefish and Red Drum. Fisherman from Fayetteville NC reports the old slogan ," A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work!" He just got down and reports that the Cape Fear River is a little low at Elizabethtown, NC.  Stay tuned!

Saturday, July 2, 2005      6: 30pm     Update! Seasoned fisherman reports lots of small Bluefish running in the surf. I ask if they were Popeye Mullets. He is pretty sure that they are Bluefish because the fish were running into the surf and not along the waves. He notices lot of broken up sand flees along the beach meaning that something was feeding on them. He is going after Red Drum and Bluefish. He knows that when a Blue is caught and the head is cut, a large portion of the blood is removed. Then one has an excellent dinner. Popeye minnows, # 1/0 fish hook on a fish-finder slip rig. Some folks call this a Carolina Rig. 5:50 pm   Hundreds and hundreds of people have been arriving for the Fourth Of July, Week-Long-Holliday. Parking spaces are all filled, restaurants are filled, the beach has a large crowed of sun and water fans plus there is "no room in the Inn". We have had several fishermen stopping by and purchasing Shrimp. That's all for now. Stay tuned!

Urgent! Practice Caution On Kayaking and Canoeing !!  About 20 years ago, a football coach and his family were staying on Baldhead Island. Before breakfast, he decided to go canoeing. He was never seen again. The canoe washed up miles away on another oceanfront beach. Coast Guard crews search for more than 5 days. At the time of his outing, the tide in the Cape Fear River was dropping at its maximum fall. Officials believe that this rapid current washed this person out to sea. Therefore do not Kayak or Canoe in the Cape Fear River. Four years ago, a young man on his honeymoon rented a Kayak and went Kayaking in the ocean. His body was found two or three days later. He did not ware the life jacket that came with the rental.     In the bay, Kayakers and Canoers are surrounded by land, marsh and/or a rock wall. Plus you never have the bay completely to yourself. Its kinda like a big saltwater public pool. There are places where the currents are fun and tricky. (example, the so called :Cribben wall between first and second bay at maximum tide change.) Simple rules one may follow; never Kayak or Canoe alone, tell a person on dry land what your plans are, ware a life jacket, carry sunscreen and insect repellent, have bottled water and your cell phone secured to your body in a water proof container. Have fun, be safe and enjoy! Stay tuned!

Friday, July 1, 2005     11:15 pm     Another late day getting back to the shop. Repairs and two fire calls.  New kind of sport fishing is here. Kayak fishing in the bay. Maybe this will catch on. From what I understand, Kayaks are not that expensive compared to other water craft. Carolina Skiffs can hit $12,000 before you began to shop for a trailer. Kayaks on the other hand may run a low as $400 for a small single 7 feet long to $3,000 for a double seated, 12 foot long. I see more and more Kayaks on the tops of SUV and other vehicles. Other news. Local Farmer reports 6 inches of rain fell in his garden on Wednesday. Stay tuned!
