Monday, November 7, 2016 Well folks, we got to see several "happy" families enjoy a good week of fishing. Over the past 10 days, the weather has been charmingly beautiful. No cold mornings and no blistering afternoons. Short paints work fine, but for November, long paints are the norm. Fishing reports are pretty good. Good sized Virginia Mullets along the surf, twenty to thirty five if you put in 3 hours or more. With family and friends, what a great way to past the time. Kure Pier has seen lots of action. Kings reports are not has many as the week before, but as everyone knows, "You should have been there last week!" Several customers rejoice when we tell them Flounder season is not canceled. On the other hand, Flounder catches seem to be far and few between. Bloodworms sales are steady. Spots, Croakers and Flounder have found the Canada leach pretty good. Oops! Saturday, November 5, 2016 Spots are few and far between. Virginia Mullets and Blues are running the shores of Kure Beach. Yesterday, the winds returned from the Northeast. Other news, the gas pipe fire in Alabama has not caused any local shortages. Reports of some gas stations out of gas in Rowan County are real. Ocean waters are very dark with Hurricane Matthew's rainwater. In our shop folks have told us many sad stories. I met one person who lost a friend and and another friend who survived a road collapse. Saturday, October 15, 2016 One of yesterday's fisherman showed pictures of large red drum and several large trout he and his family caught one block north of the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. All were of legal size, yet the count is still 1 per day per fisherman Red Drum and 4 per day for Spotted Trout. Once past the count, all other fish were released. GOOD NEWS!! Flounder season rule as been repealed. Today was suppose to be last day for 2016, now one may continue to catch and KEEP Flounder. (15 inch minimum length and 6 per day per fisherman). Stay tuned! Sunday, October 9, 2016 We're back as fishermen return to the beautiful Kure Beach Fishing Pier! Hurricane Matthews had finally dissipated out to sea. Around town, minor storm damage. Right in front of our shop, several phone and TV cable wires were hanging low or laying on the street. Kure Beach Fire Department secured the area. Elsewhere, little if any structure damage. Warning!! Road conditions back to Charlotte and Raleigh are not good. Many rivers have and are expected to pass their flood stages. Parts of I-40, I-95 and I-74 are flooded. Yesterday, news reported a driver and daughter were kill in a neighboring county by floodwaters. Their car got washed into a flooded ditch. Over the next 5 days, river, streams and creek waters are forecasted to rise. Presently the Cape Fear River has the Battleship North Carolina sitting higher than the it's visitor car parking lot! Thursday, October 6, 2016 Many Spot fishermen are here. Bloodworms are back in demand. Weather update! Hurricane Matthew's approach to the southeaster United States has many locals, including me, perplexed. Tuesday's forecast had the storm traveling North, 200 plus miles east of us. Now Florida is looking at a category 4 glance, then the storm is forecasted to hug the Florida and Georgia coastline then head back out to sea only to turn south again and turn back to southern Florida. Sunday, October 2, 2016 At the very end of the Kure Beach Fishing Pier, fishermen had their long rods standing tall. Surf fishermen north of pier had to contend with swimmers in the water. Friday, September 30, 2016 No fishing reports. Constant R A I N for the past 6 hours. I'm guessing, 3.5 plus inches of water has fallen since 8am. Looking at local weather radar, rains should be letting up very soon. Today radar has shown a long band of red clouds streaking across our town. 2 PM shows hope of clearer skies. Wednesday, September 28, 2016 THEY ARE BACK!!!!!!!!! Salted Mullets are being salted as I type. Around 10:45pm last night family of fishermen were cleaning their fresh catch of Blue's. Sea water temperatures, 79 to 81 degrees, depending on which way the winds are blowing. Gas stations have gasoline but prices vary as much as 25 cents per gallon for regular. Stay tuned! Tuesday, September 27, 2016 The dark stain of fresh rainwater coming from Snow's Cut / Cape Fear River is stretching out for a quarter of a mile or so. Other news: Big tease is going on! Friday, September 16, 2016 Clear skies are back. Its been a while. Today we had our first serious fishermen. "20 inch Red Drum was delicious" reported one fellow from Virginia. He was so excited he purchase a new Rod and Reel along with extra baits and tackle. Other fisherman loaded up on pounds of 50-61 count heads off shrimp. Bloodworms are scarce as Spot reports are null. Last week Karen and I took off for about 48 hours. Sunset Beach, Southport to Rose Hill, NC made a relaxing get-a-way. Friday, September 2, 2016 Friday, September 2, 2016 9:00pm EST. TS Hermine 100 miles southwest of Kure Beach, NC traveling at NE 20 mph. Sustained winds 50 mph, gust 60+. TS HERMINE should be 35 miles north-northwest of us by 9 am Saturday, September 3, 2016. Plans are to re-open once all outside furniture is back in place. Today, more than 7 inches of rain has fall in our town. Many roads barely passable, cars stalled, water inside floor boards of some cars, 8+ inches of rainwater flowing down 150 yards of US 421 S, pumps pumping rainwater into storm drains. In other places bad sewer odors. For this type of tropical storm, all is normal.... 7:15am Kure Beach is in the path of TS Hermine. All our apartments are closed until hurricane / tropical storm Hermine passes. The eye of TS Hermine has broken up. Average winds speeds are less than 74 mph. Around 2 am this morning strong winds with heavy rain woke us up. We knew this was just an outer band of Hermine coming ashore in Florida. Currently winds in Kure Beach are less than 10knots. Sunday, May 29, 2016 9pm Update! Not many folks down this Memorial Day Weekend. Not sure why? No traffic jams as in past years. Saturday, May 28, 2016 Those folks who were up by 6 am and after, got to see lots of sunshine. Winds were out of the northeast around 10 knots. Friday, May 27, 2016 Twice the excitement at the same time. With two sets of fishing gear, local boater enjoys 18 inch Flounder for dinner. His other catch, an oversized 28 inch Red Drum, had to go back into Snow's Cut. Cape Fear River side of Rock Jetty proved to be active with large sized Bluefish. Thursday, May 26, 2016 I spoke with our local college student today. He reports the Rock Jetty to Zeke's Island needs massive repairs. "Big gaps and dangerous holes are everywhere". Tuesday, May 24, 2016 Local college student returns to his hometown fishing resort. Yesterday's purchase of Mud Minnows and an overnight stay on Zeke's Island yield a true adventure. Nice size Speckled Trout were feeding in many places. Zeke's Island requires a boat or a careful walk along the 1.4 mile walk along the Rock Jetty. The Rock Jetty has been accelerated in breaking down over the past 25 years. During this same period, several fatalities have occurred. Construction began in the late 1880's. Monday, May 23, 2016 For us, we had an odd fishing weekend. No reports of anyone catching fish. Most folks were just looking for some R & R. For us, I took advantage of the dark rain showers. 6:15 am Saturday I spread 235 lbs of 24-10-24-Fe grass fertilizer. Iron,high nitrogen and high potassium are required every couple of years for our beach-yards. Sun and salt take their tole on bleaching the soils. Our 45 minute adventure gave us that special "pre-sizzling" effect. We did see several empty sand flee carcass along the shore. April 13, 2016 There are back! Caching anything ask a bystander? "Look in that cooler and what do you see?" Why that's a bunch of Virginia Mullets and one big Black Drum! In 2013 NC Wildlife Officials set the Black Drum recreational size limits between 14 to 25 inches. Right now, Sand flees are the number one bait for both Black Drum and Virginia Mullets. Of course, Shrimp, Pop-eyed Mullets, Squid and Clam have done their fair share of catching these seafood delicacies. Stay tuned!

April 12, 2016 Over this past week, cooler weather retuned. Easter and the weeks prior, warm, dry and packed with pollen. Fishing reports are about the same, small Virginia Mullets.
